Back in parking

I worked downtown for 5 years. And about every 3rd person backed into their parking space.
Even in a garage with slant in parking. They would take about 10 minutes trying to get their crew cab f150 into a spot. Sometimes so close nobody knows how they got out of the vehicle.
One thing if they knew what they were doing. But most of them clearly were a danger to themselves
And others. I always parked up on the upper levels to avoid them. Is that just here, or is this
become common everywhere? Please save us from soccer moms in super tankers.

It's far more likely to get in an accident or hit a pedestrian backing out of a parking lot space. It's good that you go to an area that's not crowded. Most people would fight for a parking space to avoid walking an extra 20-30 feet. If I drive my 3/4t club cab pickup I always back into spaces (but I usually try to find ones way away from people because they make spaces too small IMHO.Gustard X26 Pro DAC

If you drive a full-size truck, it’s much easier (especially in tighter lots) to back into a stall. It’s also MUCH easier to get out, especially if the people next to you park like idiots - which they often do. It boils down to physics - the sooner you can get you steering wheels out of the stall (or the longer you can keep them out of the stall when parking), the more maneuverability you have. If you’ve ever driven a forklift with rear wheel steering, you know it’s exactly the opposite - when going into tight spaces, it’s front-first for more maneuverability with the rear steering.“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

Ok, so why back into slant in?
And for whatever reason downtown, the idiot parkers are the ones backing in.
They don't back in all the way. And they park in those compact only slots.
I normally was in early. If I had to leave on a service call about 9 am,
That was showtime for morons. They would be late coming in and were reckless.
If you can't make it in on time for 9, that's pretty bad. There was more than once I couldn't see
How they got out of the car, much less how they got it parked without trading paint.
I wish I'd taken pictures. One compact car was parked in a corner parked tight to the passenger side.
Someone backed in a SUV so tight, they had to fold in their mirror,as well as the other guy's.
The poor guy in the compact couldn't get in the car , nor could he get out if he did.
About 7 PM the garage had a tow truck come in to get the SUV back out so the compact
could get out. I hope the owner of the SUV paid a lot of $$$ to get their car back."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. When I used to use the garage by Beale street, Mondays were awfull.
Partiers would leave a ton of refuse. Add whizzing and puke in the elevators,
Stairwells were like public bathrooms. I was pretty happy when I was able
To move to another one. Overall, downtown sucked. I'm happy I don't have
to deal with it anymore. Soapbox put away."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
I back in because when I was younger and had less reliable vehicles that I needed to rely on, it was easier to get a jump start if I returned to my vehicle and found a no-start situation. It's also easier for a tow truck to pick it up if it's butt first into a spot. So it's a force of habit formed by hard learned lessons of necessity.
But in diagonal spots, you're kinda stuck because backing in puts you in the wrong flow of traffic. And diagonal spots are usually used to fit larger spots in narrower spaces, like parking garages that have directional ramps. Diagonal spots are situated so entry and egress both goes with the flow of traffic and puts you in the proper direction during egress of the spot.
To back in is not only cumbersome and laborious when entering the spot but makes for greater difficulty in exiting spot because it's more than a 90 degree turn. The longer the vehicle the more difficult it is to execute that maneuver.
When I worked in the city, I'd usually go to the top level of the parking garages because they often had straight spaces as there was more room without the support pillars. It was easier to park and the spaces were often wider.
I also rarely turn around to see behind me when backing out. I prefer to use my mirrors. But that's me and I've driven all kinds of things from a dinky Ford Festiva to ambulances to 4 axle dump trucks and trash trucks. So when I see someone pulling a stunt like backing in to a diagonal spot in a parking garage in their F-150 SCrew all I can think is "Geez that guy is stucking fupid." and then I have a desire to take their truck away because they can't drive it and give them the Camry they deserve.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

In a straight parking I back in because the turning radius is shorter that pulling in frontwards...and I have a big truck.
...but like you I'll park farther and walk instead of being a p i ta or being around another p i ta2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

Come on now. A Camry is too nice. How about a Kia?
But I'm pretty sure they'd mess up parking that too."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
My experience is most working stiffs back in so they can get the hell home 0.006754 seconds faster since they can go all John Force pulling out of the gates of hell.

I feel compelled to add that parking garages in general just plain s u c k - they tend to cram about 20% too many spaces into the floor plan, and don’t even get me started on overhead clearance. I avoid parking garages whenever possible. I don’t know why people who live wherever the OP is from back in to slant stalls - that’s not something that happens here in UT. That said, I will at times pull through a slant stall when possible (and it’s not far from the end of the run, so I don’t need to drive a 1/4 mile against incoming traffic).
And I can assure you that just as many idiots drive compact cars as SUVs and pickups;-)“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

I back in because it's easier, because I can, and have the skills to do so. I am not one of those people that NEED to drive around 10 times to get as close to the doors as I can, I don't like parking in tight spaces, I don't like door dings, and if I know I am going someplace that can be cumbersome to park I will drive one of our smaller vehicles. one of my pet peeves is someone that drives a big truck and they just NEED to park in a tight parking space leaving the truck hanging out 3 feet so they don't have to walk, so it's not only harder for other people to drive through the lanes but harder for the vehicle next to them to back out and see, I HATE these people, they need to have the crap beat out of them walking back to their truck, be an adult park your big A$$ truck in the back, and freaking walk, more than likely your A$$ needs it anyway. So you may see me backed in but my truck will be in the back with other adults that care about their stuff.. Too many morons taking up good oxygen, I am sure these are the same people ruining this country..Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎

Parking spots have also gotten smaller over the years because of smaller vehicles in general...Remember, when you're running from something, you're running to something...-me

It's a mix of small and large.
And small has been getting bigger.
The Corolla and the Tacoma are both bigger than they were 20 years ago.
The Ford ranger and Chevy small truck as well.
America wants big, so the "compacts" are growing in size.
And how many people drive a car? It's a SUV, truck, or crossover.
So parking designed in the 90's is too small.

Im working on 3 million miles in trucking ind. I can't drive a four wheel vehicle worth a crap. So I need all the space I can get. So I'm always parked way out in the rear 40, so my personal truck doesn't get all door dinged up & I need all the exercise I can get... I'm pretty easy, so I don't care how others fight/fight park as long as they leave me alone..
