Super Tweeters....

So, I've been messing with a pair of Aperion ribbon super tweeters with the Bozaks.....so far with mixed results. I think I've got the crossover point ok....and the level shelved down a bit....(crossover set at 10Khz and -2db)

Definitely more alive sounding with greater air....and integrates reasonably well....but, there is some listening fatigue setting in, which kinda surprises me because it doesn't SEEM bright....

Anyway, anybody messed with super tweeters? Suggestions? Thoughts?? My general theory being the more complicated you make things, the worse it generally sounds but open to what everyone might think here...

  • I used a pair of Decca ribbon tweeters attached to my Spica TC50's with great results. I think I changed the high pass filter point up a bit to get a nice blend.

I would to bring them to slightly above the tweeters in the bozak, need to keep them tied togetherr as much as possible versus on top of the enclosure

I've got them dead center over the tweeter arrays which are in the middle....about an inch or so from the front baffle (the tweeter arrays are recessed a bit in the cabinet). I'm going to adjust the crossover point up a bit as well....

And it may also be that the ribbons need to break in a bit as well......

Interesting, I would make sure you are crossing a few hz above the natural roll of the bozak

I cross my "super" tweeters over first order at (nominally) 20 kHz and use a variable L-pad to adjust to taste. A fixed L-pad at the best attenuation (empirically or quantitatively determined) would be better.

Just picked up a pair of these to experiment with, FWIW.

The extension on the Bozak tweeters plummets after 10khz....I’m at 12khz and -3db.....better

Right, but bear in mind that a first order XO at 20 kHz is only down 6 dB at 10 kHz, and with no phase shift [EDIT: across crossover frequency].
IF (e.g.) the supertweeter is 6 dB more sensitive than the Bozak at 10 kHz, you may be exactly where you want and need to be.

Are the XOs in those Aperions first order? if so, you're only down 6 dB at 5k... so... you might have all kinds of weirdness going on at frequencies that are audible even to an old guy like me. ;)

  • My DWs have Super Tweeters mounted below the drivers with no ill effects, so I would guess your location is good provided it is close. Mine are crossed at 13K and they integrate very well.

I would tend to agree with Trey, crossing them just above the Bozaks natural crossover (10k IIRC?) so maybe closer to 11 or 12k depending on what the slope is.
