A few movies that I've seen that are not exactly mainstream are:

Dead Man-dir. Jim Jarmusch-Very surreal movie, with lots of great character actors throughout. Happens to be Robert Mitchum's last film.

Donnie Darko-has some flaws, but it is still a really interesting movie, and certainly different. For all its "cult" status, quite a few people haven't seen it. It's getting a theatrical re-release this summer with new footage.

Merci Pour Le Chocolate-A Claude Chabrol film that is said to be "Hitcockian." Whether it is or not, it's still very good, especially if you like classical piano.

That's just a few off the cuff. I'll try to think of more later.
    Current System:

Local Hero is one of my all-time favorites.

Another vote for Donnie Darko. A very interesting (and pretty freaky) flick. Outside Providence was decent too. Alec Baldwin was really funny in that one.

Others that I liked that are a bit off the beaten path:

    Go
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (the best rock muscial in years, but not for the ultra conservative)
Dirty Pretty Things (out right now in the BB new release section)
Last Orders (A really good English movie from a couple of years back, starring Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins, two great actors)

and how bout a couple of documentaries
Baraka (not so much a documentary as a travelogue)
    Winged Migration

That's all I can think of right now

. . .on for size. Evil Under the Sun (Ustinov is Great!); Hopscotch (simply wonderful fun with Matthau); My Blue Heaven (S. Martin at his best!); and To Have and Have Not (bogart is fine!). That'll hold you for a week or so - when you will also want to rent the previously-mentioned "Local Hero." Fine movies all. Larry R.

Well, I've certainly heard of Strange Brew. That was one of those silly movies that everyone of a particular time period really liked, and then it kind of disappeared. That's similar to Weird Al's "UHF," which everyone I grew up with just loved. It launched Michael Richards at least.

I didn't know that anyone liked this movie :D . I tried to watch it, but it wasn't for me. The two mooses (i guess that plural for moose) in Brother Bear sure did make me think of those guys, and everyone I said that to said "who".

Yes, that's Ito Ogami, the Shogun's offical executioner. He was framed for murder and is now an assasin for hire.

nope, but I know what you're talking about! hilarious.

this is of a similar nature I guess you could say....

it's about a guy named Mark Borchart from Menomonee Falls, WI. he's always had a dream of making movies...even though he's broke ****, in his 30's, and living with his parents. he's hilarious in his own way and it's essentially a documentary of his life trying to make a movie. it really is the one of the funniest things i've ever seem. you should rent it or buy it.

he was on letterman quite a few times a few years ago.

I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

I just had to know what that movie was called so I did a few searches and found it - amazingly. The movie I was talking about was called "American Hollow". It was on HBO for a while several years ago. Some funny scenes in it, but generally you feel kinda bad for how bad these guys have it, albeit, some of their circumstances where self induced. For some reasons scenes in that movie have just stayed with me.

I think the hillbilly documentary that Johnny Utah mentioned was the one about "Jessco" and his family. He is an Elvis impersonator with a shrine to The King in his trailer. I think the documentary was on some cable channel a few years back. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Wish I knew the name of it.

... two very funny parodies IMO (though not held in high regard by the critics, the public, or much of anyone else for that matter):

    "Cold Turkey"

    "The Big Bus"
