Powe cable suggestions

I’m thinking about stepping up in power cables. Looking for recommendations for 1 or more cables. I have a Panamax Max 5300. Where is the best place to start? Between the outlet and the 5300, or between the 5300 and my amp? Or would I be better off upgrading my sources (CA 851N and Oppo DV-980h).

I’m not looking to spend a lot. Just stepping up from stock cables. Any recommendations or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I recommend trying one on the 851N that is designed as a power cord for a source component. Don’t need to go wild on the cost to start and if you buy one from a dealer like Music Direct you can try it out for a couple weeks to see if you can sense a difference and return it if you don’t. Put a power cord in the system for a couple weeks then put the stock cord back in to see if anything improved with the upgraded cord. Many people hear improvements in bass weight and articulation and some a lower noise floor. Some hear no difference at all. Those who don’t hear any difference get to save money and spend it on better components. Those who do hear a difference usually end up getting new cables for the whole system over time.

Something like an Audioquest NRG-4 or Z3 are popular choices. A power cord that works as one for a source may not be the best from the wall to the power conditioner or the wall to a power amp. The power cords for source components tend to be less expensive in the same product line.

I would also suggest getting a 2 meter cord rather than a shorter one since in the long run the longer length gives more options for component placement.

Let me suggest the Shunyata Venom power cable, which is their entry level cable. However, I have to warn you. I started with the Venom a few years ago on my previous amps, and I was so amazed with the improvement that it made that I went on a multi-year upgrade of all my cables to Shunyata cables.

    Shunyata's a good choice.

Another thought is because of the large number of knock off cables that have been produced from Asia that show up on Ebay and elsewhere be careful if you enter the used market. If necessary, ask to see a receipt from an authorized dealer.

I would not use a power conditioner between your wall and amp and if you are using stock power cables for the amp toss them and get something 12ga or better. Just my 2 cents worth. Definitely consider better cables for your source components. Also the amps in your sig are warm and will wake up with better output fuses (if you haven't done that yet).

  • Hmmm, what do you mean by "better output fuses"?

Hmmm, what do you mean by "better output fuses"?

I use these in my B&K's

These are their old school fuses which they don't make any more. I thought I'd try them just to see what all the hype was about. Very noticeable difference in clarity and detail. They also make the Supreme which are their current model and supposedly superior.

As far as power cables I've not noticed any change when upgrading but did it anyway.

Edit: Just in case I didn't answer your question correctly. On a lot of amps (and speakers), including B&K, there is a fuse on the positive terminal. This is the one that you have to replace. B&K's used a cheap automotive fuse as with many others including Polk Audio.
