Polk Hampdon USB desktop speakers disconnecting.

I have my Polk Hampdon speakers connected via USB to my PC. I've always had a small connection problem in that they always needed to be woken up but nudging the volume control after not being used for a while. Now, they are starting to cut out while being used. It's the same fix, nudging the volume control on the actual speaker. I checked my driver and it's just a basic USB audio device driver, the speakers have never been recognized as a specific model. The driver says it's up to date. Any fixes on this? It's a bit of a pain when there is no direct remote volume control.
