TRYING TO DECIDE WITCH WAY TO GO, REPLACING MY OLD 1800
I AM RUNNING SOME OLD 10B AS MY MAIN SPEAKERS I USE MY
SYSTEM 50/50 FOR MOVIES AND MUSIC. I DO LIKE PLAYING MY STUFF AT VERY HIGH VOLUMES. I KNOW THE DENON HAS MORE POWER THAN THE PIONEER BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY INDEPENDANT TEST TO SEE WHAT ACTUAL POWER OUTPUTS . I WILL NEED TO KEEP THIS RECEIVER FOR AT LEAST 3-4 YEARS SO I WANT SOMETHING THAT WILL BE COMPATABLE FOR SOME TIME. IS iLINK A MUST HAVE? I DO NOT HEAR MUCH ABOUT THE PIONEERS ON MOST BOARDS, DO THEY RUN OK WITH OLDER
POLKS? AND I DO LIKE THE BOTTUM END SOUND I ALWAS TURN DOWN MY TREBLE A LITTLE ON MY DENON NOW.ANY THOUGHTS WOULD BE HELPFULL.IN THE END I KNOW IT WILL BE JUST PREFRENCE IN SOUND.

There all fine receivers. The Denon has the best features. The Yamaha is nice if you like your highs, the Pioneer is a nice balance with almost Identical sound quality to the Denon.

    Pick em

    Another thought,
You can't go wrong with any of these.Personally I would go Denon or Pioneer leaning stronger to the Denon.

Denon would be my pick, although the Pioneer Elite series is solid. Good luck in whatever you choose.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

All three are good but I would go with Yamaha RX-V2400 if you want to listen accurate natural sound. It is not warm nor bright, neural in other words. I know lot of people who went with Yamaha and did the side by side comparison with Denon and they picked Yamaha mainly because of it beats Denon in the 2-ch music where in movies both are equal. I use Yamaha 1400 as a pre/pro and simply love it.

The best thing is to go to a local store and listen all 3 and let your ears decide. Don't do a blind purchase based on recommendations. I was told to get Denon but I ended up with Yamaha.

    My 2 cents!:)

Is ther any advantage to having ilink? and will the power diff between the pioneer and denon be a big deal?

The advantage would be if you use other gear of the same brand, Denon, otherwise no.

Sony uses a similar method for connecting their components, but unless it's Sony, it doesn't do anything for you.

I have done side by side comparisons with a Denon 2803, Yamaha RX 1400 and Pioneer Elite 43.

For movies the Denon and Elite were close, but very different. The Elite has stunning dynamics. Which in movies works. The Denon had a very good neutral sound to it. On the warm side. I'd recommend the Denon if movies and music is what you are after.

Yamaha to my ears was by far the worse. It was rich in features but sonically it was a large paper weight, I can't explain how terrible and thin it sounded. The same speakers (Mirage OM7's) were used in all demos with a Pioneer Elite DVD player. The Yamaha's have always been thin and grainy to my ears. I would consider a NAD or the Denon if your after a decent movie/musical system. If its dynamics consider the Elite.

I could never recommend the Yamaha for people that actually care how your receiver sounds in relation to your speakers.

    Totally disagree!

I guess the Mirage were not the right speakers for Yamaha 1400 that you heard. I've listened to Yamaha 1400 on Athena and PSB in the store and it was little harsh. When I got the receiver at home and hooked up with my Polks bang! Perfect combination and it mates perfect with them. I know lot of people who use new Yamaha 1400/2400 with Polk they love the combo. The sound come from my Polk is neutral with accurate detail not bright or warm. Great for music and movies.

I'm also disagree with people who blamed Denon for being harsh, thin and bright sounding receiver but you can't blame the receiver for it. The speakers play very important role. Polks are in my opinion are neutral sounding and they mate very well with new Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer.

The best thing is to buy all 3 receivers or one at a time and listen with your own speakers and keep the one you like. Let your ears be the judge!

Another vote for the 2400. I'm using it and love it. Also works well as a pre/pro.

Looks like I will be going for the 3805. The dealer will let me take it home for the weekend on saturday and try it in my system. I had to rule out the pioneer because the price diff in canada is $400 more. I did like the sound of the yammy but it is hard to tell in a store setup.I will let you know how it turns out. on another note I just bought a pair of monitor series 2 5jrs for $100. these look like a great speaker I had a pair about 17 years ago can't wait to try them out ,but my 1800 sold and I have no receiver.I guess I will have to fire them up with the new 3805.
