I can easily remember the original Mustang ads in the Life magazine my parents subscribed to. Yes, I was about 13 and new cars were a Big Deal. So, the use of the Mustang name for this is a perfect abomination. But it will sell.

I guess it depends what you mean by "based on the same platform".
Lots of people think the Mustang II is just a Pinto with a different body.
Here's an example of the not-a-Pinto side. The guy interviewed here works for Ford and at the time of this article was still driving the Cobra version of the Mustang II.
