The recent "Cryptid" thread
https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/191813/cryptid-computer-creature#latest
just reminded me of a little "situation" Mrs. H had yesterday.

She was s'posed to participate in a videoconference with the new head of the Mass Audubon facilities on the North Shore. The platform was Microsoft Teams (or something like that). ruh-roh.

Long story short: trying to launch the meeting with the browser (Chrome) on Win 10 (home) on her lappie (Lenovo T540) resulted in a bluescreen. Every time. (she tried thrice)

She freaked out (predictably).
I launched it on my lappie (Lenovo T440s, Chrome & Win10 Pro) -- worked fine.
Disaster averted. She was able to "do" her meeting.

Curious -- i spent some quality time (offcamera) with her computer, trying to troubleshoot.
updated her Chrome (which was not current) & launched the meeting - result: bluescreen
updated her Win10Home (ditto... that girl...) & launched the meeting - result: bluescreen
gritted my teeth and tried launching the conference on "Edge" :| - result: bluescreen

Thoughts?

Oh, by the way, she does "Zoom" videoconferences all the time with that 'pute -- no problem.

I've been working with Teams a bit lately. Try the new-new Microsoft Edge browser, which may actually be Chrome, not positive.

If that doesn't work, you can try downloading the Teams desktop client application.

Does the Mrs. have any Chrome add-ons installed?

You might also try creating a new generic Chrome profile to see if Teams works there.

Teams is actually a surprisingly good platform, but too many companies are not spending the time to orient the users properly, and it's causing a lot of confusion and frustration, especially for companies who've now outsourced IT leaving the users without an in-house, readily accessible resource. It's laughable the logic in this, the amount of money these businesses are losing in lost productivity over issues like this.

Just typed a response and accidently blasted it. I'll get back to you -- thanks for the feedback/questions/suggestion! :p
  • Yeah, Microsoft Teams is the new Corporate go to, or so it seems.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

Seems like half of my online meetings are on Skype, and half on Microsoft Teams. Yes, I have been late to some meetings trying to use the wrong one, see I am the only participant, and quickly have to do the other. Doh! :s

FWIW, we have the client version installed on our laptops, which seems to work fine.

Always use the desktop app if possible. They all have their quirks, but I have found teams to be the quickest and easiest for small group meetings.

So -- as it turns out, the problem wasn't MS Teams specific -- it was a pan-camera problem, so to speak! :|

Shout out to our Son, Prof. S.R. Hardy -- who helped Mrs. H figure out where the problem was yesterday afternoon (I was working on some A/V technology for our church, if you can imagine that) :) Mrs. H had copied down the fault code and passed it to him. He looked it up and determined it was related to the driver for the integrated camera. Last evening, we discovered (as alluded to above) that any attempt to access/activate the onboard camera resulted in an instant bluescreen with the same code (i.e., it wasn't MS Teams-specific... speaking of correlation vs. causation) ;)

Long story short. Her Lenovo lappie does, as it turns out, have Win10Pro on it. It also has the latest version (2004), which she installed just a couple of days ago. The trouble absolutely correlates with ;) the newest version of the O/S. As it turns out, even though Windows insisted that the camera driver was up to date... it wasn't. Not even close. :p

Her 'pute (Lenovo T540p) apparently uses a "SunplusIT" integrated camera/driver -- her installed version of the driver was 3.5.7.25 dated 3/7/2016! This morning, I went rooting around Lenovo's online support and found the same version of the driver that's on my T440s -- ver. 5.0.18.70 dated 5/12/2020. Downloaded & installed it on Susan's T540p and it seems to work! :) I.e., it worked when I tested the video usin the Zoom app's settings (most of our meetings are via Zoom, although not all of them).

So, time will tell, but she seems to be back in the saddle again. :)
Thanks to all of youse mugs for your empathy, suggestions & support!
(and, especially, to the good Prof. Hardy ;) )

PS I also ordered her a new, add-on webcam -- just in case :p
As it turns out, these things are in short supply in the pandemic world. It makes sense (at least in retrospect), but, jeepers... what a weird world we live in.
I learned a lot about webcams in a very short time yesterday, thanks again to the aforementioned Prof. H. :) He isn't a gamer, but he's pretty tuned in to the gaming 'sphere' and has pretty strong opinions about the kind of peripherals gamers & blogger types prefer. Strong opinions?!? Imagine that. ;)
