I'm currently a denon avr-1804 and the polk rm6700's with a polk psw 303. A guy told me today that I could get more out of the speakers if i used a thinner speaker wire (I'm currently 14 gauge) is there any truth to this? Does it only apply if the wire were say gold or silver?

Did this guy make this statement after hitting his crack pipe?

He made an analogy to a water hose and sending the same amount of water through varying sizes of hoses and that the same mount of water that shoots out of a small hose will trickle out of a large hose. So he said with my rm6700's i was basically providing too large of a hose for the power they take. I thought he was on crack, he did do a good job installing my dish today though.

It is the opposite of what he is saying, the guy is a moron.Graham

From the sub to the speakers or from the receiver to the speakers,16 or 14 guage is all thats needed. From the sub to the receiver if speaker wire is used,14 will work fine.
using thinner wire I can make sense out of due to the fact that the sat speakrs don't reproduce deep bass so thinner wire will work fine.Spending the extra money there isn't going to help much
There is no need for heavier wire then what you own currently.
Yielding better performance out of thinner wire then 14,I don't think so.

For speaker wire, thinner is never better. As Dan says, you may not gain much with a larger wire than you already have, but you would never get better performance with thinner wire (unlike a garden hose, there is no pressure envolved with speakers. They'll take all the electrons that are available).Denon AVR-3803
