Gotta love those giant elephants, good scene for the subwoofers. Also good bass when that "green laser" beacon fires up.

Fun movie, but I thought the PQ was a little bit lacking sometimes. I guess that's a side effect of putting 3hrs 20mins on one DVD, however, it still is 7.8GB worth of movie. I would have prefered splitting the movie across 2 DVD's to maximize PQ. (If you don't have a big screen, or aren't as picky as I am, you're probably thinking "What the hell is he talkin' about, the picture is great!")

Anyway, this is a must have for the collection.

Regards,

After spending lot of money on the HT equipment and DVDs. I don't mind buying ROTK as a demo disc for my HT for now. I know this DVD has lot of bass and great surround sound and overall sound. I'll be treating it as a demo disc for now and also get the EE version when it comes out in November. 6 months is a long time to wait. I don't mind spending for this one. BTW I own 506 DVDs so 1 extra won't make a difference. I can't wait to see since I purchased my NAD C272 and Adcom GFA-7605 amp with all new Monter THX Ultra interconnects.

I bought ROTK and will gladly buy the EE (rumor has it that it'll be 6 hours! ). I give the theatrical versions to my oldest son.

The EE of Return will have 1 hour 5 minutes added in. Came from an interview with Jackson a while back. Not quite 6 hours, but 4 hours and 25 minutes isn't too bad I'd say.

I just picked this up and in a few minutes (after the Twinings English Breakfast Tea has steeped) I'm going in to watch this for the first time.

I've got the complete set now; and I will complete the EE version in November.

I didn't go see this in the theatre; I'm still on strile from that crap after the last trip I had to see the Hulk. This movie is great; if you haven't seen it, I don't know how you could wait to November.

BTW, I think I pissed my gf off because I wouldn't answer the phone until the movie was over. SHe called about 9 times... to tell me absolutely nothing.

Yep, I spent my 15 bucks yesterday morning. I'll spend whatever I have to come November too. I like having both sets. The double DVD can be a pain in the but when you just want to put something on in the bedroom to fall asleep to.

Wow just finished watching ROTK and Oh My God! what a solid thumping bass this movie has. Entire movie is a workout for your sub and stunning surround effects.

My new NAD C272 and Adcom GFA-7605 offered a crystal clear sound with solid midrange. My Velodyne CHT-15 was non-stop. Deep deep bass!

It is worth buying this edition atleast for now to test your HT system. Unbelievable bass notes. Elephant footsteps in the battle is a pleasure to listen.

    Thump, Thump, Thump!

Update: According to my Entertainment Weekly mag that came free with my purchase, only 49 minutes with 300 f/x shots are being added to the EE. They even list out the scenes.

    Ron:

Did the magazine mention anything about a scene regarding Saruman and his fate after the fall of Isengard?

I know this is one of the key scenes that alot of diehards were miffed about being left out of the theatrical version. When I saw ROTK in the theater, I wondered what happened to him.

Somebody was bitching about PQ, but it's been stellar thus far on my system. Much less edge enhancement than the previous two, and nicely saturated colors with good detail; very film like. I'm 1/2 way through so far. Loving it.

What are you doing on the computer then if you're loving it? :p

Watched it last night, very good. Not sure where I would rate in the trilogy. This weekend it will be non-stop (other than bathroom breaks) movie event with Fellowship, Two Towers and Return of the King. If I consider it one movie I don't have to place them in order (but I think I would have to pick TT if I did:)).

So nice to see some fellow fans of these wonderful films. I agree, the whole film is just a bass-heavy endeavor. The opening scene, when Smeagol kills his friend, and that heart thudding underscored it, the whole room was shaking. I actually had to reduce the ouput on the sub a little once the bass really got going.
I too, can't wait for the EE, and to the gentleman who asked about the scene with Saruman, yes, they are definitely putting that back in, along with an awesome fight sequence between Gandalf and the Witch King. I really pisses me off that the theatrical cut sets up Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch King TWICE and still does not have the fight scene. As for the Saruman scene, I was particularly upset when they took that scene out, as it is one my favorite moments from the book, but the scene will play out a little differently than the book, to accomodate the complete removal of the Scouring of the Shire sequence from the films. In other words, the Wormtounge/Saruman confrontation from the end of the book will be tacked on to the Gandalf/Saruman confrontation scene.
There was more they could have added, but they decided not to because of "pacing issues." Supposedly next year there will be some huge boxed set of all EE's with an extra disc of deleted scenes. So all of you who've bought both versions, there may be yet another to buy as well. And for those who enjoyed the music, Howard Shore will release a nine-disc set of the the complete scores from all three films sometime later this year or early next year. Happy viewing and/or listening.

I believe I saw mention that the EE would address this. They just had to shorten it down for the theater release. I believe the actoer who played him was extremely pissed off about it too, heh.

John, only highlights are listed with one being "Gandalf confronts Saruman at the ruins of Isengard". What I've heard as well is that the battle between the two will be added in and we will see the fate of Saruman.

When I watched ROTK in the theater I thought the bass is too loud because of lot of subwoofers in the theater behind the screen but when I watched the DVD, I believed that its the quality and power of the soundtrack itself.

    Deep and punchy bass notes:

    1. During the fight at Gondour, huge rocks were thrown at the orks army. Listen to the last rock on the ground. Deep and tight bass, a solid punch to hear.

    2. Fight between spider and Sam scene, listen for another solid puch of bass when spider hit its leg to the ground on the left side.

    3. When Nascol hits his chain ball on the ground 2 times. 2 great punches to notice here as well.

    4. Elephant footsteps were very loud and full of punchy bass. The wing flappings of dragons were loud as well.

The entire movie is full of loud bass and tight punches. I had to lower the gain on my Velodyne CHT-15 set to half way. LFE level was set to 0 db.

One of the best DVDs to demo not only your sub but entire HT system. Anybody who owns a quality HT system should get this version anyways and get EE as well after 6 months.

Just imagine how much money you're going to spend in 6 months. The price of this DVD is a steal and values nothing compare to what it offers. State-of-the-art sound engineering and jaw dropping bass to hear.

Well the bass that impressed me the most was right after Gollum fell in the pit, and the ring sank. When the eye came crashing down it had the familiar feel and sound of the ring drop scene in FOTR

Frodo's heartbeat inside Mount Doom is directly centered at 20 Hz.

There are some fairly loud overtones at 40 Hz, and some infrasonic decay products, but mostly it's 20 Hz stuff. Very impressive through a sub capable of cleanly digging that low at loud volumes.

The PB2-Ultra can do 20 Hz @ 115 dB @ 8% THD and then I chickened out because the house was starting to shudder.

There's a few spots in the movie where there is true infrasonic content, but most of the movie is 25 Hz and above.

The 202 will play the 40 Hz overtones. It will completely ignore the 20 Hz fundamental of the heartbeat.

If you're not getting waffled on this scene, your sub's checking out early.
