Good stock market news for me

Last Febuary I called my broker since I wanted out of the stock market. This was because it was obvious to me that the virus in China was going to be a disaster here, and everywhere. We sold everything that was non taxable, and moved other stocks into safer stocks. So today the broker called me, and said I was one of the few people who got this right. While the market is down a lot, my remaining stocks are only down 2%. Personally I would have rathered payed tax on a profit versus losing 2%, but it will recover. It took me 70 years, but I finally did something right in the stock market. :)

While for me this has worked out so far, I realize others have lost their lives from this mess. My condolences to everyone affected by Covid-19, and hope a vaccine is soon available.

    Well done, Bud! 👍

My “stay in the market” strategy is also working out, but not as well as your “get out quick” strategy! Everything I own is back in the green, though, except for one position, but it’s been an education for sure over the past two months... and I thought 2008-09 was tough! 😳

No need to add economic wreck and ruin on top of all the death and destruction, especially in retirement, when your options for creating extra wealth are more limited.

Allstate said I would be getting a refund, but I'm not sure how much.

Also getting a discount of 15% on my policy, but when it next renews, so not a refund.

You're a brave soul, I'm a wussy "buy & hold" guy, but it's paid off well for me. I didn't blink during the 2008 crash, and I didn't blink this time either. I'm pretty heavily invested in stocks (My plan tracks the S&P500). Last year I had 21.75% yield on my combined investments. Not bad for a amateur.

@steveinaz you don't need a "plan" to do that.

I don't pay taxes, why do you think that I am up 14%? :#

I think you mean you don't pay "income taxes"....but you PAY taxes, trust me. Sales tax, excise tax, property tax, fed taxes on every utility, and the list goes on and on.

Currently (4/25) the market is down one day, and up the next. I expect it to stay this way for awhile. It all depends on how this disease progresses, and how a vaccine progresses. If it appears things are starting to stabilize by October then I will move some cash back into the market. Otherwise if it hasn’t stabilized then we are in a world of hurt from this virus.

I think new technologies and businesses will be born from the pandemic. Companies that can innovate and adjust to a new norm after this will be successful. I have mixed feelings on some parts of the stimulus. How can we keep a Delta airlines afloat until people decide it is safe to fly again....that may be far down the road. Young people....if you can afford it....max out those 401k contributions IMO!

I think it's always fun to revisit these "stock market" threads after a few months.

Rich folks and mutual funds are looking to park their cash for a decent return due a low, low interest rate. The market isn't reflecting the financial state of businesses right now, although the corporate handouts helped the bottom line.
    It will plummet again....hold on!!

Correct. The market isn't reflecting the *financial state of businesses right now* because it always looks forward. Now if there is some bad news along the lines of the COVID-19 vaccines (like the one in Russia) failing, look out below! :#

I did good buying the chrony capitalist picks. The government picks were easy to see so I bought em. Government picking the winners and loosers is not capitalism. Regardless of what I made it will and is being taken back by inflation.

I remember thinking in March how 'at home' services should benefit from the lockdown. I had a stake in FedEx at the time which was not doing very well, but now I wish I had double or tripled-down on FedEx. Same for Amazon.

My grandfather always told me "invest in real estate" A fire can burn it but it's still land. I bought 13 acres of bare land 25 years ago for$39,000. Now it's worth $450k-$500. The world can go to hell in a handbasket but I still have a place I can set up sniper positions.

One of our financial advisors likes to say this about gold as an investment (I paraphrase):

In 1890, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.
In 1920, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.
In 1933, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.
In 1955, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.
In 1974, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.
In 2008, the price of an ounce of gold... would buy a nice suit.

    you get the idea. :)

So research the price of suits? or invest in suits instead of gold?
