The room is 12x18 ... The setup will be against the long wall, so I'll the main listening/watching position will be about 8 feet away.

    Another night shifter, eh?

Assuming 8' ceilings, at about 1700 cu ft that's a medium-ish room there. Large openings to adjacent rooms are a consideration for bass, when you do add a sub to the mix. Not much of a factor for more directional frequencies from your mains, etc.

At 8' from the long wall you're 6.5 to 7' from the "stage" and on the long wall you've plenty of room to play with the 7's split, so decent flexibility. Room behind is adequate for rear surrounds, but kind of a close call on whether to go direct radators (like the 7's) or bi-/ di-poles like the f/x series.

Let me throw a middling option on the table... a 3.1 starter sytem. A used 5.1 pre/pro plus a three ch (Carver made some) or 5 ch amp (instant bi-amp) for your mains. Of course twith the 5 ch you're only two speakers shy of a 5.1 system. Either should be doable for the price of the 650 Yammie. Add the 7's, a CSi and a starter sub... could be sweet....

Hope I'm not confusing more than I'm helping at this point. Will say that I strongly favor separates for both their performance and their flexibility in upgrade schemes...

No you won't fry your receiver using an Active Subwoofer (Power Amp built inside of the subwoofer incloser.) You could always add a subwoofer at any time. How much money do you intend to spend?

True, but I think you may have misread his premise, Bob...

We have a DRA-685 at Tweeter, which we use to power the 7's, 9's, and 15's. *not at the same time mind you* It will absolutely crank those speakers..without a doubt. Now, it's not the greatest sound..when switched to the B&K 2 channel seperates there is a definite improvement.
Anyway, you wont have any problems powering the lsi's your considering.
    Two Channel Main
    Receiver - VSX-54TX
    Mains - Csi40's
Sub - Spiked Velodyne Cht-8 On Spiked Landscaping Stones

Thanks, and I'm willing to consider separates, but I know next-to-nothing about them, and the consumer-friendly sites I'm familiar with (Crutchfield, C-Net, etc.) don't really say much about separates. Is there an online source where I can do some research?

Do a search on separates here (thread titles only for starters) and you should find several interesting discussions.

Likely your reading will only generate more questions, but also more specific questions which will help us help you.
