Return of the Krell!

Today I climbed back in the Krell rabbit hole and picked up a good deal on a Krell Evolution 505 SACD player. I have yet to give it a spin but it appears to be in very nice shape and has an upgraded transport. Looking forward to giving this another go.43ib1rb38lcf.jpg

    On a side note:

Look at the quality of the manufacture and design of the Krell, and...

... now look at the Monster Power... 🤮

Good grief, John. Could you not place it in a more inconvenient spot? It looks like you load the tray 3" up from the floor!

Given that I have 5 pieces of Pass Labs goodness in the center of my rack, computer audio to the right side and HT on the left, I was lucky to squeeze it in at all.

Yes, but do you have a remote? You don’t have to boogie on down to the floor for an FM tuner, but an SACD player? Even if you open the tray with a remote, you still have to load the disc... 🤔

John is just naturally sporty, though, so such matters are trivial to him! 😁

Finally have it set up, and letting it get up to operating temp. Like the Pass Labs gear, the Krell appears to like to have a long warmup to perform it's best. So far I have been listening to The Beatles "Abbey Road" (1983 EMI, Japan) on it and it is sounding very good indeed.

I will level match my PS Audio/Hard Drive setup and compare over the weekend. At this point, the Evo 505 is quite a bit better that I remember the Evo 525 being. It is still very clinical sounding, but with more nuance and texture. I am liking it so far, except for the gaudy blue display that I cannot dim enough to be palatable.

So far the biggest differences between the PS Audio setup and the Krell is that the latter appears to be a touch faster in it’s presentation, and it cuts right to the music. The PS Audio seems to take the edge off just a bit. Both are enjoyable, but the Krell seems to pull ahead in the side by side comparison.

Now I need a selection of SACD’s to play with. :p
    More to come.
