RT16s Crackling

I have a pair of RT16s that are about 8 yrs old. I bought them new and never had a problem. I had them in storage for about 6 months and just got them out and hooked up and there is a crackling sound in the top driver in one and the bottom driver in the other. The other drivers and the tweeter seem to be fine. I can't believe I blew the speaker - I am only running a 100 watt receiver through it (Onkyo TX-SR701). Any ideas on what could be causing the problem?

Thank you for your help.

could have blown them, but do the simple stuff first, take out the drivers and make sure all your connections are tight. If it turns out they are blown, Polk sells the replacement drivers at a discount to club members.
    Dodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
    Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
    ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
    Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
    Outlaw ICBM - crossover
    Beringher BFD - sub eq

Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!
