Kinda new to the amp thing, but I was wondering...Do I need a power amp in my HT setup? I am running a Yamaha RXV-800 reciever with SDA II's for fronts, 400i, rt5's for surround and a psw-450. I think that I have pre-amp outs on my reciever but I am not sure...haven't had the time to look at it yet. The reciever puts out 100 watts per channel. Please help!!!

Most SDA users say a 200W/channel separate amp is a minimum.

What are the handling capabilities of the SDA II's?

    Mossy,

It depends on which model of the SDA II's you are talking about. There were three versions: SDA II, SDA IIA, and SDA IIB.

SDA II and SDA IIA were rated at 500 watts per channel. The SDA IIB was rated at 350 watts per channel. I got these figures from old Polk brochures. I thought it was odd that the SDA IIB handles less power than the earlier versions. It might have been a misprint in the brochure. Email Polk customer service just to be sure. They can also send you a copy of the owner's manual.

I would not recommend less than 200 watts per channel with any SDA, preferably a high current amp design.

The Polk SDA manual specifically states that "the sda's are a very easy 8-ohm load for any receiver". I've run my SDA3.1's from a Denon 3801 and a seperate quality 250wpc amp. No doubt, its better with the seperate amp. But, it wasn't exactly bad with just the 105wpc receiver. I run my CRS+'s from an 80wpc yamaha receiver. Lots of punchy deep bass.
