7B's don't have Bass after Mod

I just did the mod with Sonicap Caps and Mills resistors. I'm pretty sure I got everything right. I spoke to a couple people to make sure I was getting the right parts beforehand. We also tested the soldered connections post mod. The midrange is very loud and clear. Highs are pretty good, but probably not as loud and nice as before the mod. Both speakers seem to sound the same. Neither has very much bass. There was plenty of bass prior to the mod.

I have done the test, pressing on the PR and the midrange moves immediately, does not take 3 seconds to come to rest, it drops instantly. This is also how they behaved prior to the mod.

Recedes to original resting position immediately or starts to recede immediately?

Could also be break in. They'll probably be all over the place for the first 100 hours or so then settle into the 200 hour range.

That did not happen to me. Bass was fantastic after my 7A mod.

    Is polarity a possibility?

  • After listening a little more, the highs are really good. Just noticeably muted low bass like bass guitar, kick drum tones.

    Check for air leaks
  • I don't think it would be an air leak as there was plenty of bass before and I had disassembled and reassembled them a couple of times, didn't have an issue until now and its with both speakers, so for an air leak to happen to both all of the sudden seems unlikely to me. When I press on the PR and release, the mid range moves in response and drops instantly.

I just checked for polarity issues. Pretty sure that's not it.

I'm also pretty sure we soldered everything in the correct positions but my friend isn't the best at it so I guess it's possible a couple of connections weren't on there very solid. Still, he tested that there was a signal between each. The only thing that seems to be effected is the bass. A lot of midrange and cymbals/high end but almost no deep bass.

When pressing on the PR, it's a press and HOLD. A well sealed enclosure will keep the MW pushed out for at least 3 seconds before it starts to slowly fall back into place while the PR is still being held in place.

Use the old 9 volt or double AA battery test. See if the woofers push out.

I've experienced it ( personal lack of eyesight when hooking up the wires :s ) and one speaker's reversed Polarity will suck the bass right out of the room no-matter how high you turn the volume up.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
  • Thanks Tony. I'll try the battery test out later today.

FestYboy- It behaves the exact same way it did before the mod and there is noticably less bass. I would probably have thought this was the issue, had I not already taken apart and put these speakers back together a couple of times and always had bass. I guess I'll try and seal it up but I'm pretty convinced there is something additional going on at this point.

FestYboy is making the point that you're doing the PR test wrong. You said you press and release the PR. You're supposed to press and hold.

Sounds more like polarity, but this is a one minute test....Just reverse the leads to one speaker and if bass greatly improves, polarity is wrong.

Break in. It takes a couple hundred hours for the new components to get dialed in. One day you'll turn the rig on and it will be there.

    Patience.

    Did you verify polarity?

Can you clarify, when you say "don't have bass" are you saying it is simply a bit reduced, or virtually no bass at all?
