Best AVR for two channel playback....

I already know that the abnove is an oxymoron, but I need to ask as I am going to have to sell my beloved PASS LABS stack, and likely a bunch of other stuff as well. Pioneer is going to give me a heck of a deal, but I am not beholden to that choice. I like the Yamaha CX5100 pre, but not sure how it will perform two channel duty.

Advice?

I would describe the 10xx and above Yamaha Aventage line as neutral. Not bright, not warm, in the middle. I would assume the CX5100 to be similar.

The wife is pushing the issue here. Another grand to replace the receiver that died after replacing a computer that died was the proverbial last straw. If the Pioneer could have waited another 6 months, I would have been ok. Now she sees my stuff as a waste of dollars that would be better spent elsewhere. Not up for sale yet, but will be so if someone wants to shoot me a pm on anything in my sig, we can talk.

Try to get a 5 channel AVR preamp, and a 5 channel amp. This should improve 2 channel playback since it has reduced circuitry.

5 channels are typically small and have no pre-outs for the tubes.

If I am giving up a stack of Pass Labs for a receiver, it needs to be a damn good one. typically a 5 channel one these days does not have preouts for an external amp...

That’s why I said preamp, not an amp. You might be right about there being no 5 channel pre-outs, but there are 7 channel pre-outs. Get two separate amps for the L/R front, and a used 5 channel amp for the other channels. Good luck.

That appears to have been established.

    (I keed, I keed.)

In all seriousness -- were it me, I would get a fine two channel thingy and - realizing this is heretical to the HT crowd - "listen" to my video sources in stereo. Really good stereo.

    What's the matter with that?

I think I might go for the Yamaha CX-A5100. I can add a 7 channel amp later, then when the heat is off, I will get the Pass XP-22 when I go back to work. The Oppo UDP 205 gets to stay as well. B)

I'm trying to figure out why you don't want a Pioneer? The Elite's are some of the very best sounding AVR's on the market man. Marantz receivers sound awesome. NAD might be where you want to be if 2 channel is more important. They sound like separates

Obviously we play in different stratosphere’s John, but with 4 kids I have to keep my AV expenditures Reasonable. I recently switched from a marantz sr5007 and a parasound 1000a to a Cambridge azur 551r, and difference was very clear. The Cambridge sounds much closer to an integrated, very musical.

I would look into the newish Cambridge CXR200. I have been eyeing the 120 on eBay but haven’t pulled the trigger...

I am a little confused with what you need to replace. Do you have 2 systems? One for HT and one for 2 channel? Are they in the same room?

Selling premium gear you are happy with at 50+% off what you paid to buy a $2500 pre doesn't make sense to me. And I have a feeling your wife won't like the idea of a $2500 pre either. You would still need amps, speakers, and everything else so what are you planning on selling to offset the $2500 pre?

If everything is in the same room I would just use your Pass 3 channel pre and dump the surrounds for HT. Poor 2 channel performance vs no rears for HT? The choice should be obvious.
