Pissed at CVS

I have a prescription for 50 glucose test strips that CVS sells for $73, with insurance $21 and change co-payment.
I was at Walmart tonight and they had over the counter 70 count for $26 and change. on their website they show 50 count $22 and change. so why is CVS allowed to screw both me and the insurance co.?

Healthcare billing is the worst. The extra money charged to insurance is probably justified as the “retail” price, which covers all the people, software and regulations involved with insurance expenses. Then CVS has their discount “street” price, which is pretty much the same as the co-pay for OTC products.

Just like Walgreens they are able to charge that amount with the insurance companies blessings. Walgreens once told me that exact thing when i asked. They and CVS will ALWAYS charge the maximum they are allowed to by law. (Even though they buy in massive bulk and receive huge discount) The Walgreen's employee stated that they deserve to make a profit as well. I LMAO and at that point refused to ever do business with them again. My mother spends 2600.00 a month at Walgreens. Some of her prescription's are 800.00 each with no generic equivalent. 1200.00 of that is out of her pocket. Just think the insurance industry is trying like heck to tilt it even more in their favor.
She has a host of problems COPD, Heart failure, stage 3 kidney failure and both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. It honestly pains me that i cannot do more than I am able to help her be more comfortable.

    It just freakin crazy.

well our town had only two Walgreens for decades we now have 5. We now also have 5 CVS as well. We never had any until they bought out Osco's which we still have those inside Jewel grocery stores. Both companies WG and CVS exploded all over in the last 15 yrs. it's only natural to contract a little now. You add to it that every grocery store now has a pharmacy wal-marts, Target's and whatever else because their is profit to be made selling drugs plain and simple.

When it comes to scripts and med supplies, if you want bottom dollar, you have to shop each convenient location nearest you.

That sometimes means go to each store and pick up your stuff. Script/med supplies have worked out deals with the insurance companies etc.

If you want all-in-one then you will not get bottom dollar on each of your needs.

Actually the lesson here is an old one. When someone else is paying, the costs to you goes up. Think college tuition, being heavily subsidized increases tuition costs. Think the Pentagon, remember them buying hammers for 250 bucks ? When you could walk across the street to any hardware store and pay 20 bucks. Car repairs...cost a fortune when insurance companies are paying. Same with medical procedures/tests. Pay cash and the price comes way way down.

I remember when a name brand prescription nasal spray went from prescription to over the counter and the cost went from an insurance co-pay of $45 to an over the counter cost for the exact same thing (not a generic replacement) of $22. Previously, the pharmacy listed the insurance cost as $240. Healthcare is weird business.

When I had my heart attack in June the bill for 7 days in the CCU was $136,562.00. Insurance with discount paid $83, 230.00, I think the operating room was included in this. Still that is just shy of $12,000.00 a day!

You don't pay cash at a hospital, you pay cash for all the other services like tests that can be done at other facilities.

Oh, and that difference between what the hospital bills you for, and what the insurance company pays.....guess who gets to write that off as a loss ?
