"grounding driver baskets"

So in my trolling the internet for random knowledge, I came across the mention of grounding a speaker basket to ground. In different places, one person suggested actually grounding the basket to a ground plug on a standard outlet, which, sounded a little crazy.

Another site said tying a basket into the ground of the speaker circuit had benefits.

The benefits supposedly was in shielding of the voice coil.

Honestly, this sounds a little out there to me but perhaps the Polk collective has direct experience ewith such endeavors.

That's not how shielding works... So right off the bat, you're being fed BS. "Grounding " the basket might actually induce noise into the ground plane of the amp and I cannot see there being any benefit to that.

You're essentially opening a back door for a whole lot of EMI and possibly RF noise that was never there.

I can't think of a good reason to ground the basket, and (more than) a century of loudspeaker design* certainly hasn't standardized it as a 'best practice' :#

There's all kinds of crazy 5#!t on the internet, you know?

It's what supports the motor, cone and allows the driver to be mounted on the cabinet.

This is NOT the speaker basket F1nut is talking about. But it is some good humor.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MMVGZE

One could also mount a free air speaker in a wicker basket hanging from the ceiling to create a speaker in a basket in a basket. Would that be a speaker in a 2x basket or speaker in a basket² ?

    The basket is the frame.

    cheap baskets.

    stamped metal (steel, usually)
(amusingly, all three of the drivers shown above were/are pretty good to very good sounding ones, despite their cheesy construction values)

    not so cheap baskets.

    cast aluminum or alloy
(these are pretty good ones, too ;) )

It actually does (or, at least, it can) matter -- a cheap, flimsy stamped basket is very resonant and doesn't provide stable alignment of the moving parts of a driver with the stationary parts. A cast basket is (should be!) much better in both respects.

Modern drivers often use plastic, or composite, baskets that are (or, at least, that can be) strong, light, and 'precise' in construction and alignment. Relatively cheap, too ;) (the baskets, that is, not necessarily the finished drivers!)
