The saying “If something is free to a customer then the customer is the product” or something to that effect has been around for about a decade now.

Having said that, anyone using a public forum should be aware that anything said is public, searchable, and trackable to one degree or another. The Vanilla platform has been linked through data aggregators and purveyors of advertising for a long time now. The icon is pretty in one’s face though, and kind of a dumb decision for every post. It’s inelegant.

But at least the Polk forum doesn’t have embedded advertising videos and spam links like some.

I went to the grocery store & almost got run over by a lady pushing her grocery cart & reading her phone recently. Maybe I'm old fashion because I leave it in the truck & my daughter always yells at me " you didnt answer your phone" . Ok. Sure thing kid. I was out of range. Oh & I'm broke :)

    ditto (FWIW).

I basically ignore FB's existence anyway -- other than experiencing a l'il Schadenfreude whenever they're gettin' trashed for their cavalier treatment of their "customers" in the news. :)

They should set it up that IF the flag button is hit let's say 5 times THEN that post is deleted. Seems that would be helpful where there are supposedly no moderators on here. Just a thought

The effect of social media and the “click culture” on young adults is devastating. Look around when you go out - it’s no wonder people are losing the ability to communicate...

    In the 80’s and 90’s:

    Today:

Pretty much sums it up, but we can't just blame the younger generations as I see adults' doing the exact same things. It's like everyone is hypnotized by this little box.

I don't allow it in my house, especially when I have a dinner/party. Nobody wants to watch you stare at your phone the whole night. If they do, I simply do not invite them back again.

Everything is a tool of sorts, can be used for good, or evil. Much like a shovel, a hammer, gun, car, knife.....it's people who abuse the tools.
