So what's the smarter way to handle this. Tell her about them before they arrive or just wait for the order to show up, or does it not matter?
Here is where you need to know your spouse. Early on I would tell her and explain why the new speakers would sound better and where the money was coming from in the budget. After a few times, she just got used to me buying and selling and then just rolling her eyes to now only saying something if someone else asks, and then she will kind of roll her eyes but nothing terrible.
And to @cfrizz, if this is a divorceable offense then your marriage has much deeper problems. Now, if $300 means you can't pay the rent or you’ll be struggling trying to pay off the credit card for a year, then that’s a different story and you need to send them back lol...
I wouldn't say I'll be struggling, but it's on credit with a 1.99% rate until the end of the year. Certainly not going to put me under. -
Rooftop, I'm not married, so I can spend my money however I please. I hope you saw the wink I put in to say I was joking.
So long as the bills are paid, and you've got a roof over your head and bill collectors aren't beating down the door. and you've got room to move under said roof and not tripping over wall to wall speakers have at it.
But we all know that some people just don't know when to quit whether it's speakers or gambling, or smoking, some will just keep going until nothing is left.
I knew this guy who had a gambling problem but wouldn't admit it, but every chance he got he would *itch about his ex who had a very good job and could afford and did buy lots of shoes. Meanwhile he was working a minimum wage job and blowing it on tickets & Foxwoods and then would hit his boss up for an advance on his pay. Then had the nerve to get mad when his boss said no.
Many marriages dissolve and it is usually over money. Someone spends too much without regard for the person that they are married to. If you let your life be dictated by your so called hobby or your wants, then it is best to stay single.
The saying of it's better to ask forgiveness rather than permission that you guys like tossing around will only go so far. At some point someone be it a man or a woman will put their foot down and say enough. That's when you need to pay attention to what's being said, and you will if you truly value your relationship more than a bunch of stuff.
To the OP, I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures if you are still alive to post them. Man this got deep, haha. This will likely be the one and only time I do this because I do love and respect my wife. Otherwise I'm a fairly frugal person. 300 bucks is hardly a crazy expenditure, home ownership and kids makes 300 seem so insignificant. Next step is to get an avr with preouts and run separates. This will also make 300 seem insignificant lol. -
LOL, very, very true. Just bear in mind, we LOVE spending other peoples money.
Decide if you want new or used, you can get more for your money used, but there won't be any warranties attached to whatever you get. Unless you get something from someplace like Accessories For Less.

I love the community, and when I do pull the trigger it will likely be second hand from someone selling their equipment.
My hope is to be able to do the same for someone else down the line. It's a win win for everyone. -
My wife and I have a joint account 90% of our pay goes in there. We each have our own accounts for our "fun" money. If I buy audio gear or she goes and get another bag we're both good as long as the joint account is not used.
When we don't have the funds for something we want we ask if it's ok to buy from the joint account. Very rare for me to get a yes unless it's on sale big time and I clean my fun account out.
Having the fun accounts has helped lower the stress in our home a lot. She can go to the casino as long as she doesn't hit the joint account. I can buy whatever I want as long as I don't touch the joint account. When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

My comment regarding forgiveness and permission is one to be used lightly and sparingly. I've been married 18yrs this July and I know that it's not something to be used all the time.
-
30 years married... We have to work on it.
Divorces USUALLY happen because of money, jealousy, alcohol, infidelity and plain old boredom can set in around the 7 year mark.
I have yet to hear about a spouses audio habits.
And we DO change over the years.Post edited by Tony M onMost people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
I have some experience with this. I recently got approval from the wife to upgrade a subwoofer with a $300 budget. I sort of went went over that by replacing the subwoofer, the receiver and a full set of signature series speakers built around the S60’s.
Watch a movie with her or play her favorite music! She could not care any less when I tried explaining how much better it would sound. She did however love what she heard when it was all hooked up and now she’s totally sold on it. -

I’ve done this many, many times.
Problem is, I have several hobbies...
Thankfully my wife is a very forgiving person!
I usually discuss large purchases before I pull the trigger, it’s just fair. I actually drop little seeds before I plan on buying something so that she is aware it’s something that’s happening soon. I’ve found she is not a fan of me telling her I want something expensive out of the blue, all the time. -

Fortunately my wife is very simple, not big on material things, but I do have a plan to combat the blowback I'm likely to receive. The wheels are in motion and I'm hoping the timing is just right. There really is no easy way to go about this, I'll just have to take my consequences and lick my wounds. God dammit I sound pathetic right now.

You could've agreed haha, it's both funny and true.
Some times I wish it were the 50's when wives stayed out of your business and a man could do whatever he wanted, all the while requesting a sammich and a bj and happily receiving. Then feminism screwed it all up Lol. -
