Cord/wire protectors for dogs

Options
My new dog likes chewing on electrical cords, speaker wire, etc. I've seen what's basically PVC tubing with a slit down the side that slips over the wire/cable. Any idea if this would change the specs/characteristics of speaker wire or audio cables? Anything out there better?

Wouldn't change anything, but I'd maybe look at grey hard electrical conduit. Tuffer to chew through

I never solved that problem when our Yorkies were puppies. They loved to teethe on the speaker cords (in retrospect I'm grateful that they were only home brew cables).

And that little devil Walter would like to mark his territory on the HT floor standing Polk speakers, until he got fixed.

    Ah memories!

Good luck brother! I got nothin for ya!

I had a dog that chewed up wires, at least until she chewed up a lamp cord. :)

Since it is PVC I doubt if it will affect the sound.

The little **** chewed on my cheap subwoofer cable....thankfully not my Kimber speaker cable.... and then I left a $300 Wireworld HDMI cable lying on the floor and look over and he's standing next to it. I almost had a heart attack but he hadn't touched it...yet. In the family room all of a sudden every time we turned on the TV it would trip the breaker, which happened to be the same breaker my man cave is on. I swapped out the outlet with a spare hospital grade one I had laying around and it still tripped. I got a good surge protector and installed it and while I was installing it I saw the culprit. He'd chewed the hell out of the power cord for the cable box and it was shorting out every time we turned it on :^ /

Slip your cables inside metal conduit.

Not sure but cats definitely should stay away from lamp cords or any cord for that matter. I would put pepper along your cable run bet that would keep him away good luck.

There's an idea. Paint a layer of tobacco sauce all along the wires, the next time he goes to chew he'll get a very hot surprise, it will probably cure the habit real quick. Actually the smell alone might deter him.

Im sure this can turn into a heated debate on how to raise a dog... however...

When my dogs were puppies (read, less than a 1 year old). Anytime they were not supervised in the house (and had to be in the house) they were kept in crates, of which, my dogs loved. I bought the crate kits with covers and the padded interior, dogs like a den environment.

If I was gone for extended times, they would stay in an outdoor area that was enclosed and covered, adequate food and water, etc... over explaining this for the internet warriors.

My point is, I never, ever, ever, left my dogs by themselves in my house to wander. They were heavily supervised, monitored, praised when doing well and reprimanded when doing wrong.

The only things my dogs have chewed on in 10 years was the time one chewed up a duelund resistor about 7 years ago... :p

I second Trey’s crating method. Same thing with our boxer. But I just don’t understand why people just let their dogs run wild in the house...not in my house!

As a general rule spraying White Vinegar is an excellent dog repellent. It also works well for on puppy pee spots as both a deoderiser and anti sniff for them to use the same spot again.

The Chupacabra took one look at the MIT Shotgun S3's I bought used on F1's recommendation and after the White Vinegar spray those cables are invisible.

I got an idea, train them not to. Put in some cheap wires during the training period, which should only take a few weeks. After they are trained, slip in the good stuff.

I've had 5 dogs, and countless others that I have watched for extended periods of time. Soon as they get within a few feet of a cable they get a stern response. Soon as they go near anything I don't want them chewing on, they get a very stern response.

This is great tony assuming you are home all day or that the pup is either crated, outside, or sequestered off from the temptation while your gone. If that pup can get the to wires all day while your not around, no amount of reinforcement will be successful...

FWIW, I used plastic pipe and fittings for an upstairs TV install. One for power, one for signal. The cat had a tendency to mess with the wires while wife was watching it. How dare she pay attention to anything else...lol Any soft covering and this hybrid cat will get through it.

I slit one pipe for the larger power plug that wouldn't go through. (IMO it looks neater using the smaller pipe). Used 90 and 45 degree fittings for nice angles. Then I covered it with Techflex. Note, it was not thick pvc. IIRC schedule 30, non pressure. I only slit one side of pipe. It was slightly difficult spreading it to get power cord in.

Tape or heat shrink ends of techflex.

You can see someone has been messing with the plug end... I have to push my right speaker to wall when not listening so she can see TV.

I may have disassembled power strip and shortened power wire to keep it tight and only as long as I needed it.

Jasper will mess with my stuff if I neglect him, the wife's stuff if she neglects him. As long as I play with him to keep him amused and tired, he leaves things alone.

    Thanks Cathy!

He is supposed to be a Bengal, which is part domestic and Asian Leopard cat. He acts like he is part Texas Bobcat though. Large claws, teeth and attitude though he has calmed over the years. He is 12 now and weighs 16 pounds.

We got him from a local ADOPT Pet Center when he was two years old. They do not euthanize. It costs $125 to drop off an animal, and $250 to adopt. All they could disclose was a family from Texas dropped him and his sister off. The female was purchased over the phone from a family in Wisconsin.
