85 db's is still low. Not good juju with something. I could blast that puppy well into 120 with the legacy's, Butler, AZ cables. Seemed like the top volume was unlimited. 🙂

With my similarly aged Joule fed by the North Star DAC, I get 75-80 dbA with the gain around 10 to 10:30 and both balance controls at noon. So it seems like something is not right. Glad to hear it’s sounding good, though.

No jumpers in my LA-100. It is feeding Odyssey Khartago monos. It is rare that I have the gain control past noon and the Maggie’s are not known for being efficient.

Again a noticeable improvement. @tonyb you mentioned that the Joule when paired with the Butler amp really was a nice pairing, so I did a little digging.

Seems like input impedance is the discriminating factor here? Just looking at the numbers. Could very well be. I know Jeff @indyhawg was also running an Odyssey amp (not sure which model) to the Joule and had similar issues. Thinking about this more, aside from the impedence issues. Do you have 2 volume controls in the mix ? One maybe for the source like a streamer and possibly one on a dac ? Since it is a line stage with no volume control ,was just wondering.
Yup - Maxed out the volume on the Cambridge. The EAD transport does not have a gain adjustment. Not sure about the NS DAC. I need to check that. verb - As a quick side note, I had the best experience ever in audio customer service, when I bought a Pass Labs X250.5 from Reno Hifi’s, Mark Sammut.
He made me feel like a first class client before I even purchased, and buying used from him is the best way to get into Pass gear, IMO. MUCH more affordable than new and still get a warranty. Usually the gear is very minty, and he rates it conservatively and provides photos.

one more thing since you posted the pic of the rear and jogged the old memory, the IC's going to the amp, trying plugging them into the tape and on the front input selector, switch accordingly and see what happens.
I seem to recall I used it that way because I liked the sound better. Just an fyi...HT SYSTEM-

So today is Saturday, despite being inside all week, working from home, today is the day I paired the Joule with the Marsh amp.
My hopes are that since the input impedance on the Marsh (56k) is less than all the other amps I have (100k) in the house, this may improve the output.
In the secondary rig. Well, I believe I'm on the right track. I now hit consistently 100 dbA peaks, as compared to the previous parings of only mid to high 80's!
The Bulter, which has input impedance of 47k ohms, may stretch it a bit further, according to the folks who have shared their experiences (@tonyb, et al).
Perhaps the Legacy Khartago mono's (22k each), is another good pairing too. Thanks again for your feedback @maxward .
I'm gonna let the Joule warm up for a while longer, and run some more measurements. Right now, pretty happy, as I rarely play the system at such a high level anymore! But it looks like the Marsh plays pretty nicely with the Joule.
