How to passthru hi-res Audio

Hi all,

I have the following devices connected to my Vizio E70-E3:

Apple TV 4K
PS4 Pro
Onkyo TX-NR809 (for ARC/CEC only)

I have it set up where devices go through my TV because my receiver doesn’t passthru 4K, it only upscales to 4K. The downside is that I can’t get TrueHD or DTS-HD MA to the receiver from the source devices. My TV is set to passthru, connected devices are set to passthru or LPCM. My receiver seems to receive all multichannel digital audio as Dolby Digital.

I have Infuse Pro installed on my Apple TV 4K, and a large library of movies and TV shows with hi-res audio codecs. Infuse decodes all formats and sends it over the HDMI cable in LPCM. Video files with TrueHD/DTS-HD codecs end up at the receiver in Dolby Digital. When the Apple TV 4K is directly connected to the Onkyo, It says multichannel on the recriver’s display and sounds like heaven. Any multichannel content the Infuse app sends to the TV causes the TV to display the Dolby logo with DOLBY AUDIO on the screen when I press the INFO button on the TV remote.

I suspect my TV is the culprit. All devices have the latest firmware updates installed. Can anyone provide any troubleshooting tips?

TV's don't pass thru higher rez codecs. If you want them, you need to run everything to the receiver first and not the TV.

Your only option of you want both hd audio and 4K video with your current setup is to get an HDMI splitter from someplace like monoprice:

It seems like several reviewers are doing the same as you. Note that I am not positive that it passes hd audio, so be sure to double check.
