I ran my DB12's ported in a 1.2CF box, but that was only 150wRMS. tell you the truth they still sound better when I have the ports closed, which I had to do when I got my 700W amp. I still run them in the 1.2 box, but ports sealed, even though I only have my emergency 100wx2 running (700 died).
The suspension NEEDS no ports.

Seriously now... I don't know about the momos, but the old DB's (and from what I hear, the momos too) need the pressure behind them to work better.
Given that I've tried them ported, tuned, etc... they STILL sound better in a sealed enclosure. Also, the nice little thin butyl rubber surround will be more stable in a sealed box... the air pressure behind the sub helps it keep a ballooned shape, thus increasing the stability of the surround. From my diagnosis, this is the most important part of the small sealed box application. It not only looks much tighter in operation sealed than ported, it sounds better too.
Josh, Thom, Kim???? Any thoughts from your design crew at polk?

well i orderd the sub,amp and box at the same time and its a sealed box and it matches the sub so im not goin to with ports couse iv allways herd there spost to be in sealed and id get better sound quailty out of a sealed anyway.all i wanna know is it goin to put a good amount of bass for 1 12???couse im goin to have that in there for a while from what i hear they pound real hard.Testing

What did you have them tuned to? How many cubes? The surround theory was GREAT......So Infinity perfects should be sealed also because of the rubber butyl surround????????????
I did 2.5ft^3 tuned to 28hz.....Sounded alot better and louder than sealed......those are the older momos....(much better ones IMO)Testing

Well it's not going to pound real hard, but yes it will create a decent amount of bass. Momo's are alright if you can find them cheap.....Testing

altec - i assume you've heard them in a properly designed sealed box?
the surround-balloon theory - while i make no judgement as to the truth or falsity of this theory, the infinity surrounds would not apply here because it was specifically stated that the backpressure helps a thin surround.
theoretically, your setup provides a single decibel of additional spl, with a significant loss of cone control. if you can provide better numbers (the current amp debate notwithstanding) or can tell me additional details about your box construction, you may come out on top on this one.
for now, i have to stand by the manufacturer of the product and accept their recommendation that the sub not be put in a ported box. even a properly tuned ported box will only add 3 db to the output at the cost of transient response and, worse, unloading below the tuning frequency (read: overexcursion and badness). even if polk said "hey, go for it, hell, do 6th order bandpass" i'd still go sealed
finally, near the beginning of the thread, you stated that "1.2 [cubic feet] is too small for a momo" in reference to jerry's db12's... now, if i'm not mistaken, the db's are not a momo line...It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon
"Its not good enough until we have real-time fearmongering. I want my fear mongered as it happens." - Shizelbs -
True.. DB's aren't momos.
I haven't got to mess around with the new momo's but my assumption is that given they have similar characteristics, I'd assume that polk kept their surround design to the greater extent. When I explained the "Suround Balloon Theory", as we will dub it from now on I guess... I am referring to surrounds like the ones on my DB's. I don't believe the infinity's are anywhere close to this thin. Example... One can take their finger and poke the surround completely inverted without damaging it. This is a thin surround, and IMO needs the support from the rear air pressure... It's a VISIBLE effect, even.
I am not sure where, but there was a recent reply in a post.... said something about "...could see the -rubber- surround flopping about like jello..." (I think it was a post about foam surrounds v.s rubber) My guess was that the sub didn't have the proper volume behind it, or was ported.

Man, it's like teh blind leading the blind in here.
Hey Altec88, I hope you didn't plan on utilizing any warranty on those MOMO's. You must not be pushing a whole lot of power through them. Otherwise you'd be here bitching at Polk Audio because you shredded your spiders.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

The lack of pressure behind the cone will merely make it more efficient and reduce the mechanical power handling capabilities of the driver (except at the tuning freq). Obviously there's a big difference between small sealed and large ported enclosures, but the surround isn't going to collapse or anything. It's formed rubber... you could play it freeair and it'll retain it's shape.....Yes I have heard momo's sealed, I prefer ported, same SQ with a boost of output. I gave my momo 500w and it took it fine....
Rubber surround flopping around???? There is something seriously wrong with the sub if that's happening. It won't flop around freeair....
I meant momos, not the DB's.....
"theoretically, your setup provides a single decibel of additional spl, with a significant loss of cone control. if you can provide better numbers (the current amp debate notwithstanding) or can tell me additional details about your box construction, you may come out on top on this one."
A single decibel? Where'd you come up with that? Please explain the "loss" of cone control......What details do you want about my box?Testing

I'm old enough
So do you understand my point? Please don't say momos are bad ported if you haven't heard them in a ported box, or a correctly made ported box, just because they say you can't, doesn't mean you can't. Adire subs are made for HT, we use them in our cars ......and yes the rubber surround theory is a complete myth ........Testing

yes i know everything
good sound or not, momos are not built to be ported, you port them, they die...ive seen it happen
