I did see a few comments floating around from movie reviewers when the movie was in the theaters comparing it to Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves." The reference is because both movies are epics set in historical periods, the main character sort of loses himself in an unfamiliar native culture and finds respect for it, both movies are long, and both actors/directors put a lot of themselves into their movies. I don't think the reviewers were making the comparison in a complimentary way though.

    I'll buy it.

The better half and I watched it last night. The first time in a long time I've purchased a movie on Tuesday and actually got to watch it on Tuesday. Overall, we both really enjoyed the movie.

my wife and i watched it last night as well and both really enjoyed it. great scenery and story , not and outstanding sound track though. i thought the howitzers could have been a little more intense , not like the cannon battles in master and commander. overall though good movie.

Very good movie, especially if you're not the type to over-ANALyze the plot's plausibility. Good sound quality, too. However, they could have cut the last 5 minutes of the movie.

Two thumbs up - very good movie. We'll buy this one after we rented and watched last night. Much better than the reviews suggested; I was pleasantly surprised.

Last Samurai was a good film. Not a great film, though. Overall I liked it, and in this time of crappy movies, that's saying a lot. The love story in particular was handled really well, very subtle, not like an obligatory sub-plot at all. I was sorry to see Billy Connely's role was so small, and a couple of shots of the final battle are right out of Braveheart, but other than that it was pretty good. I agree about the film score, excellent.

I'm behind the times I know, but I now wait until movies are in Blockbuster's previously viewed section, at 3 movies for $20 it's a deal.
I thoughly enjoyed this movie. I can't fault it in any way. We'll, except for the bad 15 second CG effect shot of Cruise atop the ship sailing into Tokyo.
The rest of the movie was awesome both visually and sonically.
Great story and writing, with powerful
    non- Hollywood romantic moments.
Great action scences and fighting sequences.

    A definite buy!

Agreed! That was TERRIBLE. The guy who CGI'd that scene should be shot! (see We have protesters today! thread on the shooting comment). Uh oh, need to add another winkie/smilie. ;):)

I agree with movieguy. The cannons could have been a little more intense, but the sword fight scenes and overall sound quality were decent. Good story with a little something for guys and gals. A must have for movie buffs.
