Set-up problems

Trying to set up my friends polk 6005 speakers with a yamaha receiver model 5630. Followed the wiring based on Polk's diagram and double checked everything,
The receiver shows a message "check speaker wires" and then shuts off. The manual says that this indicates a short from incorrect wiring.
I was wondering if there could be a conflict with the way Polk wants the wiring done; or if possibly i am using too heavy a gauge wiring (12) and it is not connecting inside the speaker or receiver.

Try unplugging all the wire from the receiver, if the message goes away you had a short and the problem is not the receiver. Try rewiring again more carefully. Even one little strand that touches another wire will cause a short.
I am not sure what method is described but I dont see how it could cause this problem, maybe if there was an internal short in the Hi level inputs/outputs on the sub?Graham
