I just bought the new DVD of Sheryl Crow's called THE VERY BEST OF, THE VIDEOS. Let me tell you, this disc rocks. The sound quality is awesome, with the soundtrack being an audiophile quality 24 bit/ 48 khz of pure LPCM resolution. I know that a lot of you might wonder what this means. But the audio soundtrack of most DVDs are either dolby digital or DTS, which are both lossy encodeing formats. A lossy encodeing format has to discard (lose) information in order to compress the audio stream into a smaller file. But linear pulse code modulation (LPCM) is a lossless encodeing format, that is in the transfer of the audio stream from analog into digital, there is no loss (hence lossless) of audio information. Consequently, a DVD with a high resolution audio signal (such as this Sheryl Crow with 24 bit/ 48 khz) provides a very smooth, analog sound with an extended top end, thus eliminateing the need for those audible brickwall filters.

And the picture quality of this disc is simply stunning as well. The colors are vibrant, and the blacks and whites are simply stark in riveting contrast. This is a must own disc.

hey how do you know it's 24bit? it says AC3 surround 2.0 which in my player plays it in pro logic.

sounds seems good. but it's about the same i've heard on most other "videos, greatest hits collections". either way.. i love Sheryl Crow. we need more female rockers like her.

That is why I started this thread, the package does indeed say that the disc is a dolby digital AC-3. But when you play the disc (at least my copy), there is no audio set-up menu, the only audio soundtrack is an LPCM soundtrack. The way that I know that this disc is a 24 bit/ 48 khz is that I have access to that information in my video display of the DAC section of my DVD player. I simply hit display, scroll through a few modes and the native resolution of the disc is displayed in the video monitor.

Because this disc is a high resolution audio disc, I am by-passing all DSP circuitry (including pro-logic) and I am playing this disc straight from the DAC through the analog circuits of my pre/pro. This straight analog signal is the cleanest way to listen to any high-resolution digital source, it simply by-passes all un-needed DSP circuitry and gives an un-processed sound.

ohhhh my bad. sorry i didn't know you were bypassing all DSP modes and going all analog. so then your player does the decoding instead of your receiver? or no decoding needed?

i'll have to try that out as well. using the analog only inputs.

Exactly, I am playing this disc the same way that a person would play an SACD or a DVD-A. The internal DAC circuit is in the player, then I am using a set of RCA style analog jacks to pass the analog signal to my receiver at the pre/pro point, a point much further down the line than any DSP circuitry. This pure audio signal is then simply amplified and the resulting music is a holographic sound of the purest quality. I have checked many other DVDs and this is the only one that I own that has this high resolution audio soundtrack.
