I built one similar to the one msg posted. I made it in two pieces so it was easier to relocate, minus records of course. I used four 3/8" wood dowels in the sides of base with four holes in the top section. I used some heavy duty casters. Two fixed, two swivel.

This one holds some popular requests, ~300IIRC. The other 700 are in milk crate type bins. The extra high ones where the albums don't stick out.

Very nice indeed and a great idea. Would you happen to have dimensions for this build? I already purchased the ply wood for original post but, i like this better.

Thanks for the kind words! I have a basic diagram with dimensions. I made sure there was enough room between top and bottom to comfortably get records out of the lower bin. The sides and fronts are Oak.

I used a router to slot all joints and a Kreg pocket-hole jig tool for glue and screw construction. It is plenty sturdy. It doesn't flex at when rolling it around loaded. I didn't bother filling the pocket holes since they are not visible. The pic below is of the back side which is usually against a wall.

Thanks for the diagram. I will see if i can do it with the one piece of plywood that i purchased. Wood working is not my forte. I don't own a router or the other tool shown.

You can look at renting a router. Places like Home Depot have tool rental. You would need an edge attachment to keep the router on path. Them things will get away from you free hand!

If not, using more screws would give you more strength.

It's a great tool! I used it to build our L shaped bar too. You can get plugs for the pocket holes too. Glue and knock them in, sand down.

I did a build based on those plans posted at AK. Made this one for a friend.

I pretty much used the plans and used modest ply. Added wheels to make it movable.

Good information to know. I asked the boss and she like the first plan better so i have it all cut up and ready to be sanded and put on a finish. Hopefully will be finishing up soon.

Had i known more i would have not had the screws showing in the final build. I put 3 coats of poly on making sure i sanded lightly between coats. I actually thought the poly would have been thicker than it actually turned out. Maybe i needed 5 coats or more?? I did add some wheels purchased from the depot. I do like the idea of being able to roll it around if needed.

I must say there is something really nice, satisfying about woodworking. Taking a piece of wood and converting it to something beautiful & useful.

I found some LED lighting for the bottom compartment. It has a remote, motion detection and four light colors but, the white light is perfect for seeing those albums on the bottom. As for the top i am just using some old desk light i had floating around till i find something a little more attractive.

Here's my record storage for the past 10 years. It was a discarded fridge that fit perfectly into a former window opening. The window opening is on the backside of the building where it's not visible and I never looked out it anyways. I saw the fridge as an insulated, secure and waterproof box to start with. One afternoon of framing, then added a couple shelves and an led light and I have lighted record storage that doesn't take up floor space inside the listening room. Certainly not something you'll see on an episode of Cribs but it works for me.

You done good! The rule for visible fasteners is placement, and your upper and lower screw placement match. I bet it wasn't by accident.

You can tell if poly stops absorbing into the wood. Looks like a uniform sheen under the lights.

    Love the lower LED!

My little buddy Jasper helps me pick, he has better eyesight for the lower section.

I see more albums that need a home...time to build another! If you are like me, I build one wood thingy(called the prototype model)and then get ideas to improve it and build another that usually looks even nicer.

    @SCompRacer
"You done good! The rule for visible fasteners is placement, and your upper and lower screw placement match. I bet it wasn't by accident."

That's my OCD kicking in. It had to look uniform.

My buddy told me to set up a jig and... I said the only jig i know of is the Irish jig.

I don't have a table saw and the blade on my circular saw was old and didn't give me a clean cut ( even when taping the cut line) so i stopped and bought a new blade. Partial damage already done. Glad i had a finishing sander to help remove some product from the off cuts.

The rest was easy peasy. I pre-drilled holes for the lag bolts to put on the wheel assembly. There was absolutely no splitting of wood at all and they are solidly attached to the bottom. Although i will be careful rolling it when needed. Records do weigh a bit and wheels on carpet can't be good.

Overall a very satisfying project and i would not hesitate to attempt this again.
