I have and there isn't much difference between the Guiness and Beamish. I found the Beamish a tad sweeter and it had a nuttier aftertaste vs the more bitter Guiness and Guiness' chocolaty (is that even a word?) aftertaste. The thing about Beamish is that Guiness is a pretty popular brew in this area so not alot of stores carry Beamish and the ones that do charge a premium for it.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

No lemons for me! As a homebrewer and a beer judge I tend to drink a wide variety of beers and can appreciate all styles of beer, but will never put a lemon or lime in my beer! Now, with that said, some it is appropriate in some beers to include syrups, as in woodruf or raspberry syrup in a Berliner Weisse bier. German Wheat beers should allow the yeast character to be detected visually and in the aroma and flavor. American wheat beers, like the Boulevard wheat have more hop aroma and flavor and fewer of the yeasty components. Don't ruin a good beer by putting a lemon or lime in it!
Most folks who say they do not like beer, just don't like what passes for mainstream beer. If you try something besides the American lagers in all their varieties (lite, dry, lo-carb, etc) and try REAL beer in its many varieties, you will undoubtably find something that you like.
Sami, if you live in the Dallas area and like lagers (pilsners) try Blue Paddle Pils from New Belgium brewery, or the original pilsner, Pilsner Urquel. Just don't put a lemon wedge in 'em!:pBob R in OKC

Sheiner light was a suprise, a friend brought a few and they weren't that bad. I think I'll give it another try as well, this time with a little less alcohol in the blood from the start. -
I was stationed in Germany for 3 years. They put a slice of lemon in the weizen beer over there when they serve it, so I guess that's the way to actually serve it. Not wimpy at all!

I'm a fan of "wheat" beers and prefer it with a slice of lemon but would still drink it without. Paulaner Heffe-weizen is probably my favorite, Shiner makes a decent one too.
hope that doesn't make me a wimp. if so, oh well, don't really give a ... what other people think about how i drink my beer

Ahh! The uninformed! The difference between ales and lagers is the type of yeast and fermentation temperature used to create the beer. Ales use top fermenting yeasts at warmer ferment temps. and lagers are bottom fermenting at cooler temps. Since you lived in Germany, I'm sure you are aware that to lager means to store, usually at very cool temps. Just because we have been conditioned to think that lagers (in America) are weak, insipid, colorless and tasteless drinks, doesn't mean that all lagers can be painted with this brush! In Germany did you ever sample any dark lagers, a Dunkle or a Schwarzbier!? How about a Bock bier or Dopple BocK!? All lagers! Weizenbock? Lager! Oktoberfest? Helles? Dortmunder Export? Vienna lager!? Lager, lager, lager!Lagers can be just as strong and flavorful as ales. In fact, Eisbock is an extremely high alcohol beer! They can be just as hoppy, too! Fresh Pilsners are full of flavor and hops. So, before you talk trash about lagers, make sure you've tasted a REAl lager!Bob R in OKC

... detected visually... to me that means you can see chunks floating in your beer... ?
You know, during the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used to consume a hot drink made from peanuts because they didn't have any coffee. In regards to some of these "earthy" beers... just because you CAN make a drink from it, doesn't mean you SHOULD make a drink from it. Some of the earthy beers.. I think I'd rather chug Everclear, eat dirt and hit myself in the forehead with a ballpien hammer... but, then again... I like tequila shots... to each his own.
Edit: what is up with the time on the site? I posted this at 5:05pm CST.. and the post says like 11:55am?? -
In a German-style wheat beer, Hefeweizen, you should indeed be able to see the yeast. But not as 'chunks', rather the yeast will give the beer a cloudy appearance. "Mit Hefe" means, with yeast. If you have a bottle of Hefeweizen, you should notice sediment in the bottom of the bottle. This sediment is yeast, when pouring the beer, when you get to the last 1/3 or so of the bottle you should swirl the beer to loosen the yeast and pour it into the glass. The beer will have a cloudy look to it. The yeast in a true hefeweizen will give the beer the aroma of bananas, clove, and/or bubblegum! It's 'sposed to smell like that! You want those aromas, not the aroma of a lemon or lime!Bob R in OKC

From www.beeradvocate.com on The Hefeweizen
"One thing that the German and American styles both have in common is being served with a slice of lemon, either on the rim or right in the glass. The majority of Hefeweizen drinkers embrace this presentation, as there is something about the puckering tartness of a fresh cut lemon slice in a German Hefeweizen or American Wheat that sooths that summer heat away. However, we highly recommend that you dont use a lemon as 1) its not as traditional as you think and 2) it takes away from the actual beer. Enjoy!"
either way... I like wheat beers  -
Ahh! The uninformed!
Just because I prefer ales to lagers it makes me uninformed? Hmmmm!?!?
Being a beer connoisseur I know exactly the differences in how lagers and ales are brewed...believe me!
Yes, there are decent lagers....sorry if I offended anyone, however, generally speaking the ales will be much more flavorful and full tasting. The lagers tend to be too smooth for me. I like a lot of bite.2 channel - Willsenton R8 tube integrated, Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE DAC, audio optimized NUC7i5, Windows 10 Pro/JRiver MC29/Fidelizer Plus 8.7 w/LPS and external SSD drive, PS Audio PerfectWave P3 regenerator, KEF R3 speakers, Rythmik F12SE subwoofer, Audioquest Diamond USB cable, Gabriel Gold IC's, Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cables. The main problem with your statement was the fact that you challeneged the masculinity of everyone who drinks lagers by stating that only real men drink ales. While very few were not vocal about it, it doesn't normally sit well with people when you offer such a broad and rather offensive generalization like that. It not only makes for bad blood but it also makes you look "uninformed" to use a term already presented. All okbrewer was trying to do was ignore your brash statement and offer insight into the difference between the two which it seemed that you lacked from your statement.
Don't get mad at okbrewer, he handled your statement very well. He easily could have flew off the handle and started a pissing contest but took the higher road. Maybe you should stop taking so much offense and follow his lead. If you don't want to be treated like an idiot, don't act like one. Good natured ribbing is one thing, offensive insults is another. There is a fine line that seperates the two and it gets crossed far too often here in the name of fun. What may be fun to you or in your eyes may not be so in another's eyes. I don't see how anyone could have taken that statement literally.

Arnold Swarzeneggar (sp) once said, when asked this question during his bodybuiling years, "How much milk do you drink per day?"

Now certain humorless folks may have taken offense too that. Most, no doubt, took it for the joke it was intended to be.Don't get mad

Offense! Who's taking offense?!?! I certainly didn't.

Why would you get banished for not liking beer? It's not for everyone, simple as that. It doesn't make you any less of a man or anything. I know a few people who don't like beer. It kinda sucks because sometimes you just want to go out and "grab a beer" with a buddy but they don't like beer so what do you do then? I know there are plenty of other options so don't go harping on me. Some people don't drink at all and that's ok too. You don't have to apologize for yourself either.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Just yankin' yer chain Dragon! No offense intended! I'm always looking for opportunities to educate people about beer. It's part of my mission in life! I'm a beer Evange-ALE-ist! I just get tired of hearing people claim they don't like a certain beer, or beer in general, when in fact they haven't tried enough of the different varieties of beer to make an accurate judgement.
In the words of Fred Eckhardt, Famous Beer Writer & Sake' Statesman:

I hear you. For me beer is a refreshment. While I do enjoy a good dark beer once in a while, I'm partial to lager since I'm most likely to drink beer when I'm thirsty. That's why it also needs to be well carbonated. Sometimes I even substitute red wine to beer with my stake, especially when in Finland when I know I can get one that satisfy my taste. With buffalo wings, beer is a must. I do enjoy the taste of a good lager very much but it has its own purpose.
For socializing, I'm more inclined to have a glass of gognac, whisky (single malt) or red wine. For serious partying vodka can't be beat, especially straight up. Tequila, bourbon, not my cup of alcohol although will go down if mixed and drunk enough. Bacardi and gin are fine drinks for mixes.
p.s. does anyone know where I could find a bottle or two of Lagavulin? -

Actually Anchor Steam is one of my favorites. I'm not sure it's a 'true' lager, but it does use lager yeast I know.

I live about 5 miles from the brewery. When they first opened I was there every 2 weeks for the next 3 yrs to pick up a half keg for my kegerator and to mingle at the tasting area. Really friendly people there who make some really great beers. The IPA is out of this world!

Is that Mad River Brewing Co?? As in Steelhead Extra Pale Ale?
Or is Steelhead the name of the brewing co.?
Since my kegerator bit the dust I've been drinking Sierra Nevada Pale Ale....yummy stuff. I go through about a case and a half per week. I also like Guiness for a change of pace.
I also get the Stone IPA occasionally. This is actually one of my all time favorites....it's just a little too strong if you're planning on slurping down 4 or 5 of them in an evening......6.9% alcohol vs 5.6% for the Sierra Nevada. I have bought kegs of it in the past though, as well as the Arrogant ****....just not real great for everyday guzzling.2 channel - Willsenton R8 tube integrated, Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE DAC, audio optimized NUC7i5, Windows 10 Pro/JRiver MC29/Fidelizer Plus 8.7 w/LPS and external SSD drive, PS Audio PerfectWave P3 regenerator, KEF R3 speakers, Rythmik F12SE subwoofer, Audioquest Diamond USB cable, Gabriel Gold IC's, Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cables.
