Why people say, “sell everything and buy new stuff when you get there” in regards to moving.
We are surrounded by boxes so numerous I cannot even begin to fathom how they will fit into the new apartment in St. Louis which is 200 sq. ft. smaller than the apartment we’re in now.
The next time we move, if it can be boxed up and shipped via FedEx or UPS then that’s how it will make it’s way to the new place. Otherwise, everything will be sold, donated, or adding to the landfills.
I’m moving smarter next time, for sure!

That's because people tend to be hoarders, and haven't learned how to let things go. I have always lived in apartments, so space has always been limited. So I got into the habit that if something new came in, something old went out. This is true with clothes, furniture, and yes my gear!
When I moved from Boston to Quincy, I had a ton of stuff in a storage locker, that I hadn't set eyes on in over 10 years. I dragged those boxes right into the garbage room. Then I went through my bookcase and dumped all the books that I only read once and knew I would never read again. I dumped all of my vhs tapes and two vhs machines, since I had transitioned over to dvds.
All of my furniture came with me, since it is still in good shape, and naturally my system came with me.
Now some would take the opportunity to try to sell it all, then have the excuse to try something new. Which is fine if that's what you are into, fortunately I'm not so saved myself lots of time, trouble, and money there.
Having had to clear out first my mother's apt. and then my brother's in a relatively short time, I quickly learned that holding onto stuff just leaves you with a cluttered up mess.
If you find yourself holding on to $hit because that is what your parents did, GET OVER IT! You are not your parents, and you should be living in the NOW, not the BACK THEN.

When I sold my house and moved in with my Honey, I had a bunch of my stuff in a storage unit for years. After we finally decided to move my stuff to the new house, about 80% went to the Salvation Army instead. Other 20% went into the garage or basement (man stuff, tools, car parts, etc.)
We have since moved into a much bigger house recently. In fact the basement of our new home is bigger that the entire old house! Needless to say, only about 20% went to Salvation Army, 80% went to the new house!
Not sure if this helps. Not sure why I admitted this. Hmmm. I think I may be a hoarder!

Been there, done that. Being military, I deal with this every two years or so. I almost always have stuff in boxes still in my house somewhere. It’s hard to get Rid of everything and start over so often though. One of these days I will get rid of all the “extra” stuff still in boxes2 Channel in my home attic/bar/man cave

I have elderly neighbors across from me that has boxes stacked to the ceiling in their 2 stall garage. They have 2 newer cars cars that sit out year round. Normal!

When we lived in "the Bay Area" (Silicon Valley, to be more precise), virtually no one in our neighborhood parked any of their cars in their garage. Those houses had no basements, so the garage was the de facto basement for most folks. We kept one car (Mrs. H's) in the garage -- not because we had so much junk in there (we didn't -- in those days) but because the garage wasn't really quite big
enough for two cars (and our cars were on the small side of mid-size).
Of course, that was in the late 1980s -- I reckon that houses built more recently have bigger garages.
On the other hand, houses like our fairly modest two-story 4BR abode in our old neighborhood in Milpitas now go for about $1.2 million (whether you can put two cars in the garage or not!).

I don't think English has a word for what they are now. 
Our house in Milpitas was a nice enough house, on a typical South Bay lot (I think the lot was 6000 square feet... maybe 8000... but I don't think so) in an OK neighborhood (with a pretty tough commute to Sunnyvale, where I worked, even back then). I can't imagine anyone willingly paying over one million US smackoleums for it, though.

I know exactly what you mean. We are in the process of moving from central Pennsylvania to western Colorado. I got a quote from the movers to move all of our stuff and was shocked. Their quote was more than the cost to buy new! So we switched to plan B. We fit both suvs in the garage during the winter. Summer the main one goes in and leaves lots of room for bikes and whatever.
I bike around our neighbourhood and see many with a two and three car garage packed with junk. -
My garage is full of toys. 2 cars and 2 motorcycles, plus woodworking tools, etc. Our daily drivers never saw the inside of a garage. We plan to rectify this problem - build a bigger garage! Wait! Does this mean I can get more toys?
