Also great for keeping teens from texting and driving - got my son a ‘99 Ranger w/ 5sp manual. Driving a manual transmission is a lost art any more.

Our son (the mathematician) loves to drive a manual. He's pretty militant about it (as, come to think of it, are my daughter & son-in-law).

Sort of more or less on topic, last fall I did test-drive an F350 4 x 4 with a 6 speed manual in it. First gear was what I think they call a "granny gear" (oh, those hep truck drivers and their keen lingo!) -- so low that I think if you're aligned with the direction of the earth'e rotation, the truck actually moves in first gear. If the truck is facing the other way (into the direction of earth's rotation) it sits still.
