I admit it. I bought a pair of these beauties? Couldn't afford much else, to naive to know better, and yes I was mesmerized by those quite verbose data vacant advertisements.

I can only say this was an early baby set on my journey ...

The infamous DAK Colossus Speakers !!!

I'm sure I had something from them, but can't, for the life of me, recall what. Use to look forward to their catalog back before I knew better.

I think I bought one item from DAK. A 1200 baud modem. I think modems were one of their big sellers. I bought one to use with a Televideo 950 dumb terminal. Just under a hundred bucks, I think. Probably a little earlier than 1987 but not much earlier. Hey it worked well. I think I had to use an IBM serial printer with the Televideo. Then a few years later I networked about five early PC's together in a Novell network, that was a royal pain.

I loved looking at and reading their advertisements in stereo Review, I think it was. It was GREAT advertising!

I couldn't afford anything from them though. I've seen one of those sets of speakers on our local CL a year or 2 ago. The owner wanted 200 bucks for them. :o
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I never bought anything from Drew A Kaplan -- but my father in law bought a carton of cassette tapes from him/them. I don't think they were consequential.

Also, I do have a "Cerwin-Vega" coffee-table subwoofer in the basement which I believe was of DAK provenance -- but I found it at the Harvard (MA) town dump, so I cannot confirm that it was from DAK.

Borrowed images, but the aforementioned "subwoofer" looks like this:

Did you get it from DAK? ;)

I should really get rid of it -- but I keep meaning to put a new foam surround (red, of course!) on it and fire it up... someday...

I couldn't confirm the DAK connection to this model via Google this AM when I posted the borrowed photos... but I am pretty sure I Googled it some years back & read something, somewhere that implicated DAK as a marketing channel for it :)

The DAK catalogs were great, weren't they? Such purple prose for such -- second-tier (or third, or fourth) products. :) When I read Steve Deckert's (www.decware.com) hyperbolic praise for his own products*, I figure Deckert must've cut his teeth on DAK catalogs ;)

    ________________
    * Don't get me wrong, the Decware stuff is perfectly OK (if not inexpensive any more)... but Steve's over-the-top prose kind of sticks in my craw :|

2nd confession. I still run my BSR equalizer from DAK !!! Yes yes I know I’m gonna get hit, but bring it on !!! What? I’m running an equalizer? Shame. I was mesmerized by the red LED sliders and the graphic spectrum analyzer display !!! It does have a pink noise generator which is pretty cool. Pics to follow.

If you like running an EQ for the ability to fine tune your sound, you could upgrade to this bad boy, at least that way you'd be doing a better job at preserving your sonics/details: http://www.schiit.com/products/loki

I have one of those, too! The members here destroyed me for the way the EQ was set when I had posted this picture, years ago. In all fairness, I had hooked this stuff up in the photo to see if it still worked and did that for the picture. They normally were pretty close to a straight line, except for a little ghetto bass boost.

This thread made me go through a bunch of old magazines last night that I had saved. Found a bunch of J&R Music World, some gun magazines, Sharper Image, Skin Diver, some old Playboys that embarrassingly had some sticky pages :open_mouth: The real find was some late 70's O.G. Wilson catalogs that I used to make my Santa Lists when I was a kid. All those vintage Star Wars toys! I wish those toys were still in their original boxes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. It was given to me by someone I used to do some work for. When I got it, I only had sound from one channel, now neither work. My hope is that it just needs a belt job. I'd love to get it working again, but fear the cost, just to have a nice tape deck. Although I don't see it getting much use, but would be fun to rock out on some homemade road tapes. You know the kind, you sit near your tape deck for hours waiting for a certain song to come on the radio, only to have the DJ talk through the first 20 seconds of the song! I have a first generation Miata that rarely gets driven that still rocks a tape deck. I should pull out those road tapes from yesteryear and jam to some Phil Collins! I've already got the Crockett stubble.
