You have to control the ball all the way to the ground.
He didn't.
Yeah, unless you are a RB, then you can reach across and lose the ball and it's a TD. How is that okay, but the catch he made wasn't? I know that's the rule, but it's dumb, he obviously caught the ball and had control as it crossed the plane. -

By the other rules, ball crossed the plain, he had control of the ball. In my view, the play was dead as soon as his knee hit the ground while in complete control of the ball.HT SYSTEM-

I agree with you that in these situations it should stand.
But, the current rule does not agree with us. If the receiver loses control of the ball while coming down, it’s not a catch.
As the rule is now, it was the right call. -
His right hand had control of the ball the entire time. They got hosed and I really don't like the Steelers.Political Correctness'.........defined

But he didn't lose control, he had it even after his knee hit the ground. If your going to say the ball is still live after he hit the ground, then the ball crossed the plain while in his control. How long after he hits the ground does he have to maintain control ? Because he hit the ground before crossing the plain with complete control. The very least....it was a catch at about a foot short.HT SYSTEM-

He is not down till he’s touched. The receiver has to control the ball all the way to the ground. He lost control when his elbow hit the ground. Had he made two steps prior to losing control then he would have been a runner with possession of the ball and would have only needed to cross the plane. But he wasn’t cause he didn’t and consequently dropped the football making it an incomplete pass.

Long story short, if New England would have touched him when his knee hit the ground, before reaching over the goal line, the ball would have been placed on the 1' line....like I said...stoopid rule2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

He has to make a "football move", which is an insanely ambiguous term.
Usually it would mean planting your feet and moving while controlling the ball.
What he did was all under the umbrella of "coming down with the ball". If you bobble the ball and it contacts the ground AT ALL, it's a no catch.
That ball clearly had contact with the ground.
Yes, he had control of the ball when he stretched out, but it's a moot point here. It's not a completed catch since he lost control while coming down. You can't rule a play a TD with an incomplete pass...
The concept of the "the running back can lose control after it passes the line" does not count here. A RB's possession and a receivers possession fall under totally different rules. The RB's rule would have applied IF he was considered a runner (completed the catch and running with the ball), he was not.
He was a receiver that failed to maintain control while coming down with the ball. -
Gotcha, if your a running back, you can be the clumsiest MF on the planet, but a receiver has to catch the ball, do 2 forward flips, a back flip and plant his body 4 inches into the dirt before its a catch.
Good point Skip on the football move.HT SYSTEM-

He caught the ball, his knee was down, he wasn't touched and basically carried the ball into the end zone. It is not the same as catching the ball in the end zone. It was a touchdown.Political Correctness'.........defined

Again, I agree that it should stand.
But the rules don't. Everything he did was "in the act of going to the ground" and in the end, he did not maintain control all the way down.
I don't agree with it, but the rules are what they are. -
But he would have been down if the D would have touched him when his knee hit the ground prior to him reaching over the goal line2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

If he maintained possession of the ball...
His stretch and attempt to get the TD cost him control and it cost him the catch. -

But at that point, he is no longer a receiver since he's already on the ground. Then, all he needs to do is cross the plain, control after that is irrelevant. No ?HT SYSTEM-

Simply, no.
His pivot and stretch were all part of him going to the ground with the ball.
When making a catch like that, until he is fully on the ground with clear possession, it’s not a catch.
This same rule has burned, and benefited every team in the NFL. -
Nothing y'all say matters. Game Over.

If you watch the replay of the Steelers catch, he caught the ball and held it steady with both feet in the air, then both feet touched along with his knee. At that point it was a controlled catch imo.... then he reached for the plane, and crossed it. I understand about control to the ground, but he already did that.

This is one of those rules that grants far too much power to the officials. It isn't clear cut and allows them to alter the outcome of a game.
That being said, the Steelers still had the opportunity to AT LEAST take the game into overtime. Throwing into traffic like that was a flashback to the Patriots/Seahawks Superbowl. The difference between genius and stupidity is; genius has its limits. -Albert Einstein
