To my ears, DTS soundtracks are more enveloping than DD.

DTS has a higher sampling rate which makes is better. If used to its full potential DTS will sound better. Just think of when you make MP3's, a 192 MP3 sounds better than a 128 MP3 because of the higher sampling rate.

Amen! I just picked up the Superbit copy of Vertical Limit and the DTS soundtrack is beyond belief, not to mention the improved video. Watching it on the FP is amazing!

Yes. Look for Superbit titles. I just made my own Superbit Undercover Brother, I stripped out all the menus and dolby crap and made it just video and DTS.

i've been partial to DTS ever since i got into buying DVD's. i think the sound in DTS has better dynamics overall. nothing wrong with DD of course.. but if a DVD has both tracks. i'll always choose the DTS soundtrack over the DD

I FIND THE DTS SOUNDTRACKS MUCH RICHER AND FULLER IN SOUND, THE SURROUND EFFECTS SEEM TO ME TO BE MUCH MORE PRONOUCED . IF YOURE INTO CONCERT DVD'S AT ALL DTS MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOURE RIGHT THERE .

There are several good DD tracks out there, very good actually. However, when it comes down to discs with a choice, DTS is always the winner to me.

Who uses their DVD player to decode anymore? Good question...

Every player I've owned does DTS...

a DVD player will only pass thru the DTS signal.. your receiver/preamp does the decoding for ya. it's all so magical. i don't know how it does it. it just does.

there are probably little tiny men in each unit. and they switch it between DD and DTS. waaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Are there not DVD players that let you send a line out for each speaker once the DVD player does the decoding?

yeah but i think that may be only for DD. and they are 5.1 analog RCA connectors. most of todays new model DVD players no longer have those 6 analog RCA connectors. unless you go to the higher end stuff. those used to be standard on most any dvd player. till a few years ago when the $49 DVD hit the Wal Marts of the world.

I'm guessing that a lot of people when buying a new DVD player, naively ask the salesman if it has DD. I think its become a buzzword selling point for DVD players and DVDs. Perhaps dts does not have that buzzworthy recognition yet.

DTS by a far margin. Better envelopment, panning, and integration.

I used to think DTS always sounded better, but with my current setup DD seems better. DD has a higher volume output (switching to DTS lowers the volume for some reason), and has a greater bass impact. My current DVD player, although expensive, only has a DTS digital out, not a built-in decoder. Could this be the reason? My receiver is of high quality and DTS sounds great, but better? Not quite. I know it should though.

    gregure,

i don't think ANY dvd players have a DTS decoder in em.. only a Dolby Digital decoder.

DVD players only pass thru the DTS signal and it is then decoded by your receiver.

i could be wrong about this.. but i'd be surprised if a DVD player had a DTS decoder built into it.

the digital connector whether it be optical or coaxial will work for both Dolby Digital and as a pass thru of the DTS signal.

    ;)

My Panasonic DVDP has built in DD and DTS processors. There are several that do actually, at least last time I looked.

    Yep, mine too.
    DV-47a specs

There are tons of players are DTS capable, those simply pass the signal to a receiver/preamp/external decoder. Generally the players a little farther up the ladder will have a decoder built in. As long as the processor you're using has quality DAC's, then it shouldn't make too much of a difference.
