Tell me, please.....is this a really "****" idea? :D
It's just sand with a little chlorophyl added....right?

You'd have better luck with just sand than with litter. That litter stuff isn't dense enough.....

I was hoping for some scientific facts...there's gotta be something more. You see....Sparkles the Cat recently disappeared (coyotes no doubt)....and I've got a shitload of kitty litter and no sand. This has got to be OK....you ever hefted a bag of Tidy Cat?...that stuff is just as heavy as sand.

It's a matter of Weight stabilization. Sand has more mass per cubic ltr cubed. EXPERIMENT. That's the WHOLE nature of this site. LET US KNOW!!!

    (FYI, sounds pretty sh!itty!!!;) )

FWIW: Sorry to hear about Sparkles. That kinda stuff happens. I worry 'bout Fluff all the time... I hope she's a smart kitty!!!

    Tell Everyone My Condolences.

    Sorry to hear about Sparkles.
Thanks.....she was the best cat I've ever owned by far :(

The kitty litter probably has better absorbtion properties than the sand, possibly negating the slight disadvantage in denseness.

Are you goin to PISS into your speaker stands? (i'm hoping not....)

Therefore the potential for it to soak up NOTHING makes a waste of space.......(reminds me of BW)

OK, I have to jump on this one.

The only fear I have is this kitty litter can retain moisture, and this may damage speaker. So I would use sand over litter, and I do think sand is heavier.

    Also before I go....

    Sorry about our cat Sparkles.

Uh....it was in reference to absorbing resonances and other unwanted stuff...talk about bw, jeez, lighten up!
Where does it say you have to use only lead shot or sand anyway. The point is to add weight.....nuts, screws, rocks, pennies, gold bullion...etc.

    PS...thanks about Sparkles.

We had a thread about this a while back.

    http://clubpolk.polkaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10777&highlight=bulk+density

Sand is the best best. It has a high bulk density and is much cheaper than "shot".

Kitty litter isn't too bad either.

how is it gonna absorb moisture enclosed in a speaker stand?

True...besides it's a very dry room anyway so I don't think moisture would be an issue.....I live in So.Cal. remember....we don't know what moisture is....but even sand would absorb moisture. I like the piggy bank idea too....the more you saved the better your speakers would sound....gives you a little added incentive.

You wouldn't have to use pennies....even if you did I'm guessing 20 bucks per speaker stand.

Mass is better than air, period, who gives a shite what creates it.

I say fill it with solid 24K gold, that is the only real way to accomplish the task for this joint.

A speaker, with the ability to radiate it's sound, without any outside factors, to include mounting factors....is more in line with its design, and development criteria. Frequency response, performance, etc.

Loudspeakers are designed in "ideal" enviroments.....the real world application rarely has an "ideal" enviroment. The more you can accomodate a speakers' ability to simply radiate the sound it was designed to, in the first place, IMO the better.

    True performance.

If you're going for pure mass weight.....lead. The more weight the better.

If your stands are metal I would be afraid the kitty litter may have some chemicals in it which may cause a reaction. I have no idea what kitty litter has in it though.

You living in Southern Cal, it may not be a problem. I live in Florida so say I think it would be a problem. Either way wouldn't take the chance. Having a cat myself I just don't really care for Cat Litter, for anything but he's BOX.

I even think Sand cheaper then Cat Litter.

Just to clear up my point......I didn't mention the absorption issue because of it being a problem with retaining water. Think of the litter as if it were a dried out sponge. The aerated pieces of the litter (which are designed to soak up the moisture) are in essence air filled pieces that wouldn't be AS effective as sand because of (as Doro and others pointed out) the difference in the overall density.........

I wasn't saying that having kitty litter in your speaker stands will draw liquids to them......

Plus, Kitty Litter may have a smell all on its own. If you want your listening room to smell like a litter box, go for it.

You never know, if you get a new cat, or hopefully the missing one comes back, it may start spraying all over the speaker stands.

That's what I was looking for! My initial thought exactly!

    Good point!
BTW....I am NOT going to do this. It was just a funny thought that came to my mind as I passed the boxes of Kitty Litter out in the garage the other day. I thought I'd throw it out there for fun.....not that it WOULDN'T work, mind you! ;)

Appreciate all the condolences RE: Sparkles......what a great cat she was :(

I've heard of people doing it in the past. Sure it's not as heavy as sand, but it has a higher rigidity/mass ratio. It's not perfectly round, so after tamping, the granules tend to interlock with one another.

but this isnt a debate over if sand or kitty litter is better, just a question about if he can use the kitty litter that he already has to fill speaker stands. im pretty sure we all agree that the answer is yes, you can use it. but would u want to? probably not. it might not smell, and it might be heavy enough, and it might not absorb moisture, but if ur really that tight financially that u cant buy some sand, then sure, y not use some kitty litter to see how it works. who knows, it could be great for filling stands.

it maybe better than using sand from a local school yard which a cat may have already used !!! full is better than empty what it's filled with is another story
