Anyone ever try this method ?

So one of my #6511 dimensional drivers went dead the other day and w/ a meter it's reading wide open not the 4 or 4.1 ohms it should so it's beat. I really noticed the difference which was great that I knew the SDA was doing it's thing. I ordered one from Polk w/ the discount and free shipping and just in passing asked Kim if the butyl surrounds were trimmed any better. He said, no and instead of using a blade of any type use a flat washer to secure the speaker and it will not pull on the surround. Now listen, I know it's only 4 holes to trim and I don't have Parkinson's so I should be able to trim them but again has anyone ever used the washers ?

I wonder why the product is still being made wrong.

Washers will still exert pressure on the edge of the rubber. This will cause it to "bunch up" over time (it will actually move). I've seen it. Best to CAREFULLY trim the rubber.Home Theater/2 Channel:

The better question should be how you doing ? I have brand new blades so that will be the way to go. A bunching or movement won't do.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

I use these to trim foam surrounds on woofers when I do re-foams. Works great!

Nice. What method do you employ to actually trim? I would presume backing, hand pressure and twist to cut, and not a hammer?I disabled signatures.

I'd still trim them. The washer still wants to turn and pull/distort the rubber.
Cardio rehab is a blast. Hopefully there will be TV's so you don't fall asleep. Been through it twice this past year and couldn't wait to get it over with both times. It does help and you can tell it's improving your daily life. It's just so frickin boring. -

Leather mallet... One good (supported) strike should do it with a sharp bit. -

Agree 100%. I have used washers and it will tear and twist the rubber. Kim is right on many things but not this one imho. Trim it. Those punches look promising tbh.
Good find. -

The conditioning part was great, I've used treadmills and stationary bikes in the past.
The strength training was a PITA. Was sore as heck.

How about a leather punch? Applying some firm pressure while twisting may make for a clean and round relief without damaging the surrounding rubber. Just a thought. Oops. already covered. In the past, I've used license plate bolt sets to trim the rubber. Just tighten the square nut from the backside, and use the head of the bolt as a guide.Home Theater/2 Channel:

You really DO find out who your real friends are and which family members really do care about you when you have a serious health issue. I have several guys I thought were good friends that disappeared after I had my first heart attack. A year has gone by now and not so much as a text from them. Screw-em!

Sorry, I missed this. Use hand pressure & twist slowly. Foam cuts easily. Rubber would probably be tougher, but I think it would work fine. -
UPDATE-UPDATE. The new # 6511 driver came and I did the cutting of the excess surround w/ a new very sharp single edged blade. This worked and the speaker is in and the SDA is doing it's thing and again all is well w/ the world. Sounds great at any volume. Will try some loudness after breaking it in for a few hours or so.... Of course wishing Dave all the best in his recovery.
