Upgrade to RTi A7
Hi all,
Just bought a Yamaha 681, and currently have 3.1 HT, TSX 110 as LR and TSX 150 as C, Polk PSW110 as sub. I am thinking to change LR to RTi A7 and later upgrade C to CSi A6. The main use is for movies in a 18sq feet room and speaker will be at 10 feet distance from where I sit. I appreciate good sound but I am not a audiophile to notice minor improvements. The main reason I want to change to a tower for LR is to have a wider range of sounds that with current TSX 110 (single woofer) I dont have. I did a demo test at a local audio store here in Argentina (done with Yamaha 2ch amplifier, dont remember the model) and I noticed the difference between TSX and RTI sound. RTI was richer and could different more sounds and frequencies.
After putting you in context, I know if I want the best sound ever I should get amplifier, the million dollar question is: 681 would do a decent enough job if I upgrade to fill the 18sq feet room? In case amplifier is a must and mandatory, a Yamaha S701 would be enough for A7?
Last question, I am currently using FosPower 100% OFC 16 gauges wire, only 4 feet distance from AVR to speaker, is necessary less gauges for this speakers? All I read online is that gauges matter only when running long distance with the wire.
Thanks a lot for reading it all.

For HT use that AVR should be fine with the RTiA7, but I believe you will find they sound better set to small letting your sub handle the main bass load.
Since you say you're not an audiophile your current speaker cable is likely to be all you need. Should you ever desire to try something else gauge alone is no way to shop for speaker cable.Political Correctness'.........defined

To make RTi (A) sound their best you will need to get an amp. Yes it will sound good on your current AVR but not to the fullest. Any RTi above the RTi8/A5 should be given the proper power.
I would suggest to look into the signature line. Some great deals on these going around right now.
Take some of the money you save going with signatures and put it to a better sub from HSU or SVS
For speaker cable call Doug http://douglasconnection.com/main.sc I got my raw cable from him for a good fair price. When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Would probably work, but think you would be happier moving up the food chain a little. If it's in your budget, the RX A8xx would be a better choice. The Aventage line has better build quality, and this is the least expensive series that offers pre-outs. You can add an amp in the future, if you wish to.

Thank you all for the fast reply. Will go on with rtia7 and try to upgrade to Yamaha RX a1060 soon to get more from them.

At 4 feet speaker wire runs, 16 gauge is fine especially running your front speakers in small. If you go longer I suggest going with a good quality 14 gauge wire. As said above gauge isn't the only thing important for speaker wire. You want a good quality cable.Dan

My favorite "budget DIY" wire is Canare 4S11 or 4S8.
Pre-made "budget" wire, Signal Cable:

In my HT I use Signal Ultra's to run my fronts and Canare 4S8 is used to wire up my surrounds. For my surrounds, I combine two of the conductors and it gives me an effective gauge of 13awg.

I have the opportunity to upgrade to A840 or RX-V781 almost at same price. Both have pre-outs, only that 781 has a little more output power than 840 and DTS X and Atmos. As I will only run at most in 5.1, considering this I understand A840 will be the right choice even being 2014 model. I am missing something?
Thanks a lot. -
What's your budget?
If it's in the $800-$900 range, I would be looking at refurb units. You'll get A LOT more receiver for your money.

Yes, your missing a few things.
For instance it may have HDMI 2.0, but in that series hdcp 2.2 and bt 2020 wasn't even thought of. May or may not be an issue.
The Aventage series have better components, and better calibration programs than v-series AVR's.
One could argue either way as which is the better choice. Personally I would probably look into RX A850. Biggest differences in the 850 and 860 is no DTS X decoding.
There is a noticeable difference in sound quality between the RX A and RX V series AVR's, at least to my ears. Which is why I suggested to try for an Aventage series, if you're going Yamaha. -

Thanks a lo for the info, unfortunatelly I am in Argentina and my alternatives are fewer.
Currently Yamaha A840 and 781 are the best and only options available. Also just found Denon 3300 in same price target.
Budget is 1000 usd, but is hard to compare prices becuase of shipping and import duties.Post edited by brey on -

Currently I am using a 1080p tv, wont change to 4k HDR or at least one or two years due to high prices in this córner of the world (Argentina).
The only think may be and issue is if all movies are coming with DTS X only now. And the A840 is not able to decode.
