I would save the cash and put it toward a tube pre with home theater bypass. I think the result will be much more rewarding.

I'm thinking this might be the way.

A tube pre will elevate your musical enjoyment to another level. And you can get a really good one in the 1000 (cad) and under category. I used a marantz ht processor as a 2 channel pre and worked pretty decent. But a dedicated 2 channel pre will have you asking yourself why you didn't do it sooner.
    2 channel:

    Theater:

Home theater bypass. Let's you use the receiver as well. So actually quite easy

Not really, as already stated....one with a HT bypass is your ticket. You can even use one without the bypass, as long as it had a standby mode so you don't have to leave the tubed pre on all the time.

Which ones are good/bad/cheap ? Depends on your idea of cheap, throw out a number to stay under. Tons of options new and used out there.

My problem is not as bad as I thought speakers are now farther from the back wall and with my tt the sound is deep and wide and full and very rich.

speaking of tube buffers (not that anyone has been lately, it seems)...
I am, it goes without saying, very biased -- but I still would encourage anyone interested in these little boxes to take a look at this threadful of grouchy old white men (myself included) pontificating on them. :)

Tube buffers...meh.I suppose the injection of some even order distortion can make an overly clinical sounding system a little more warm and fuzzy. The added distortion and probable deteriorated noise floor might be akin to putting lipstick on a pig.YMMV.
