  • I wonder when Polk developed and tested the RDO's did they use 30 year old crossovers parts.

That's a good question and probably a resounding no. I doubt they would go through the trouble to look for out of date caps, I'm sure they just went off the original specs. Either way that would be a bummer but a good excuse to replace these old tired parts.

The unwanted artifact that was provided in the video does not indicate anything that would be associated with a bad crossover. Just a connection.

It's amazing what a bad connection will do (even if it visually looks OK).

I have another hobby which is the restoration of early SS pinball machines from the 70s & 80s. One of the first things I always replace are ALL the Molex connector pins. Even though they may look OK and even test OK, after 45 years the connectors are always less than optimal. You can clean and re-seat them and get by for a while but eventually they always give you problems.

When you think of all the money some people put into things like expensive speaker wires just to have the final wiring inside the speaker cabinets connected with cheap spade connectors that over time lose their continuity, it makes the expensive speaker wires seem like a waste.

I would totally-eliminate the connections (which is easy and inexpensive to do) before assuming anything else.

I had the same issue with a batch ,being 3 out of 6 194's that i installed into my 2.3's last year,I really noticed this same problem while playing a few tracks of Dire straights "brothers in arms" and funny enough they were all slightly different.ie...bad one to worse one....... They weren't resonating nicely at all ,Quite sad actually as living here down under is a major drama to exchange but i will be swapping them in this next year !

At least someone has experienced it before, makes me feel less crazy. I will still double check connections but I feel I'm just having bad luck.

I started to doubt myself and my diagnosis, so I went back and listened to the video again. I didn't realize you had the SL2000 in the other speaker at the time of the video. There is definitely one of two things going on. Either you loosened one of the connections leading to the RDO tweeter(s), which at this point is highly unlikely, or you have received defective tweeters.

The sound coming out of the SL2000 is completely normal. The sound coming out of the RDO's are FUBAR. Try placing the SL200's back in and see if the unwanted artifacts remain. If they disappear, then the RDO's are defective. End of story.

That's what I'm thinking. I've put one rd0 in and had issues but the SL was fine. Put both rd0s in and same issue in both. Put both SLs back in and everything was fine. I just hate reaching out for a 3rd set of replacements without dotting my I's and crossing my T's. Thanks for all thebhelp though guys. I even tried cleaning the terminals on the tweets and the spades, switching polarity EVERYTHING. Same results with the RD0s sounding like poo poo.

  • What are the odds of receiving 4 defective RDO's? That is unless there was a run of defective product.

To my ears, that noise isn't from a crossover issue, may not even be a tweeter issue. As Tom pointed out, sounds more like a connection issue or a cable issue. The RDO's have more detail in them than the SL's and that may be enhancing the poor quality of a cable in the loop.

Try some different speaker cables or IC's, maybe flip the cables on the source component your using to start. Have anything laying around you can use to make this determination ?

I can put back my monster cable. I figured my blue jeans would be fine. Will put old speaker wire back in to test.

  • I ran into an issue very similar to this years ago in some custom speakers I was building. The side notches in the main tweeter holes were deep enough so the wood was forcing the connectors inward towards the magnets causing the diaphragm plates to bend and distort. Made the notches larger and problem solved.
In my Monitor 12.2's, I had to open the terminal notches a little with a rat tail file for RDO-198's to drop in smoothly.
Also make sure all 4 corners of the tweeter plate are settling down inside the routing. One corner sticking up is going to tweak the top plate when the screws are snugged up. That would put a bend to the diaphragm too.
Easy test. Simply slide the tweeter out of the cabinet while playing and see if the issue continues or goes away.
  • Correction. Should say in 1st paragraph the terminal clearance notches weren't big enough.
  • I switched out the speaker wire and think that may be the culprit. I am going to test further today and make sure.
