5jr w/Peerless & XO upgrade?

I would like to replace the sl1000s in my ported 5jr with Peerless tweeters and upgrade the crossover.
I understand that I would need to get the tweeters and the crossover from a Monitor 4 or 5 that used the Peerless and the same model woofer that is in my 5jr.
If there is an easier or better option I am open to it. This is all new to me. It was suggested I post pics of what I have now.

Those look familiar. Is there any way you can modify those for the peerless tweet network?Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.

Find schematic for the peerless model and copy it.
If there is one -
Wonder if Peerless are even compatible with MW6502 (4 ohm). The speaker specs I find all have Peerless matched with MW6500 (8 ohm).
-
For any given inductor value, the crossover point changes proportional to the ohm value. Has anyone conclusively found/measured their actual values in a Peerless crossover network?Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.
-
Was the size of the cabinet a factor when it came to determining the original values?
-
For the PR models, I believe so.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.

Hmmm.... So in theory one could take the whole speaker assembly from an original 4 that used the Peerless and put it in the 5jr. The 5A was significantly bigger and used the PR. I would think the 4 would be close enough dimensions-wise to not affect the sound too much. Probably more trouble than it's worth but you could do it.

Peerless Monitor 4's are relatively tough to find. You might be better off looking for a pair of Peerless 5's which come up way more often than trying to do what you want to these 5JR's.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Just remember that the 1st peerless Polks were experiements and the reason for various revisions. The consensus from this community hails the Monitor 7B as Polk's pinnacle monitor of the era. I would copy that network with the peerless if you can.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.

Experiments? They were fully fledged products sold to the public. Any Peerless Monitor sounds better than it's SL1000 or SL2000 counterpart. RDO's are debatable with some preferring them.
I disagree with the various revisions being experiments. It's more likely that the revisions were due to cost. It was cheaper for Polk to sell their own tweeters than to buy Peerless tweeters from another company.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Polk should have kept the peerless then, because they down-graded with the sl1000.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.

I like the passion here. I fell a little in love with Polks back when I was just a teenager window-shopping at the mall so I get it.
-
I guess another option would be the RDO-194s.
I was hoping to do an upgrade with parts from that general era. And the cabinets for these 5jrs are in really sweet shape. It would be a shame to have to cut them to make the 194s fit. -
When I modded my first 2 sets of 5jr, the box baffles were seriously flexable in that area. I also dissected an sl1000 and remember mic'ing to confirm if a replacement silk dome could be swapped.....Indeed was the case.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.
-
So a clean swap without having to modify the crossover? And an upgrade seeing as they are 30+ years old?

Polk should have kept the peerless then, because they down-graded with the sl1000.
Tooling broke peerless had to stop because of it. -
Is that when they started making the US Peerless tweeters?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Do not believe so iirc that was the tooling that broke. Geppy1 would be the one to ask he researched the snot out of the peerless tweeter. I believe the tooling from Denmark was moved to USA when they started other tweeters in Denmark. -
There you have it, then. Polk was forced into switching tweeters.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

There is an eBay-er who does crossover upgrades.
I assume people here are familiar with him and his work? -
Yeah, that's @westmassguyafterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Just took a peek at some notes I had scribbled down..... Looks like the voice coils are 25.60mm OD
I would definitely like to know what WMG's opinion is on grafting in the peerless to the 5JR.

I sent him a link to this thread via eBay.

I have a pair of Monitor 7B's with the peerless tweets and the crossovers were recently modded by WMG with new binding posts, etc. Crossovers have the Sonic Cap/Mills resistors combo.
I am willing to sell them, however, shipping may not be cost effective.
I could ship all parts and maybe you could find some cabinets on the cheap.
Just a thought, if you would be interested

If he knew how they could be modified (again) to work in a 5jr with MW6502s something like that would be ideal.

The original 5jr had a 2nd order High-pass and 1st order Low-pass. I don't see a resistor in the crossover photo you posted, however It might be tucked under the NP Electrolytic Cap. The correct replacement tweeter is the RDO-194-1. You would need to modify the inset on the front baffle, or the back of the 194 for it to fit properly. The old Peerless Tweeters would not be compatible with that crossover.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Could the crossover from a speaker that used a Peerless, like one from an original 4 or 7B, be modified to be compatible with the MW6502 in these 5jrs?

Have you even went and looked at all the schematic's here?

There is a ton of info at your finger tips.
The original M4 does not list any tweeter info, but here it is VVVV

and revised in 1989 VVV

I'm thinking both above came with SL1000 but then again when I look at others I know came with PEERLESS they do not state that it is PEERLESS but later generations do state SL2000, SL2500 or SL3000 if the SL3000 was ever an option which on many it was not. Many stopped at the SL2500
This one below is 1990 and I believe it is with the 3/4 mylar tweeter so I would probably cast this one aside as not to even think about UNLESS I'm over looking something here.

I have looked at them but the technical side of this is all new to me. So they aren't of much help. Unlike the good and knowledgeable people here.
