The belt could stretched out, even broken or it's possible a CD is jammed inside. Take the cover off to inspect.

yup what F1Nut said. These have belts or plastic gears that wear out. Could be an easy fix.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Opened it up and removed the four discs. The fifth one was locked into cd transport spot. Figured how to release it . Player opened and closed ,then locked up again. Loved this player. Oh well, time to retire. Thanks for the help. D

Could be a bad belt, could be a bad optical pickup......

Does the tray spin around to each disc location looking for a CD to read after it closes?

This would be my guess as well (the belt, that is) -- cover's easy to remove & the little drive belt is easy to see/get to (at least on the "normal" Sony CD changers).

The Yamaha changers have this problem, too. I have been known to fix those, temporarily, with small rubber bands -- and, no, I am not proud of that.
