Audio Rack - any tips or opinions?

Looking to house the big system into a nice audio rack. I've heard adona, Steve blinn...

But I want to know what's your dream rack if you had one?

I would really like to look into HRS or SRA offerings.

I built 2 of my own.

I really dig the designs from Timbernation and he will customize them however you want.

I had my own built (out of wood) based on drawings I did. You can find plenty of options for plenty of $$, but here's my advice on longevity:
    1) make the shelves adjustable/variable height (with a couple of extras)
    2) vent the top (if enclosed) and use the top shelf for AVR/receiver/etc
    3) put a glass door on it if you want to keep out dust
    4) if the back isn't open, at least use material that's easy to cut (cable management)

These things--along with a quality furniture builder--has allowed continued use of my equipment rack (now @8 components) for almost 25 years.

Solid is the biggest factor in order to eliminate vibrations from the music. My 500 lb rack works great.

    Hey Bud

How painful is it to disassemble the rack to move it to the next house? At 500lb, I have learned that it is an easy task to move something like that around?

Does your rack have isolation components within the rack system (i.e. between platforms or isolating it from the posts)?

With two people it is easy to assemble and disassemble, and I put mine together by myself. The Mapleshade rack is solid maple shelves and steel poles. The poles are threaded and each shelf sits on brass rings that you use to adjust the height of the shelf. Then another brass ring screws down on top of the shelf to lock it down. There is no isolation between the shelf and the poles. It becomes a single, solid unit. Simple and effective.

I am attached to my custom made cardboard cutouts. I have had them since my first night with the amps, which I think was in July 2014. I can't even see them now, but can hear the amps. :)

I know nothing about racks (or the big leagues!) but man after going to the Chi show the last three years the HRS stuff does stand out. I very well remember the $230K before rack and cables 2014 Quintessence Audio room with the Focal Stella Utopia EM speakers. The sound and bass was massive in that room. I remember being just as impressed with the HRS SXR racks as I was with the gear and the sound. Just amazing and substantial looking stuff. I don't know what they cost nor do I want or need to know. LOL!

Oh man, this brings back memories. I was at the very back of that large room, The system was playing at a moderate volume but there was some BIG low bass that was felt coming from those $100K monsters! That system had no problem filling the massive space. I guess I would expect nothing less at that ridiculous price. My house did not cost that much....even with my remodel budget added in!

Oh GOD, I guess I should have guessed the prices are absurd!

That's a hell of a lot more than my dream racks, the Salamander stuff...which Is pricey for me. I very well might end up making something using black 80/20 T-slot aluminum frames inspired by the Synergy 245. http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/upload/85f0c523-b98b-8ca2-9757-516ba523a5ad

LOL. During the day they are okay, but at night it is like a car coming at you with high-beams on. :)

I can second the maple shade products are first class. We purchased the vinyl and cd racks and were very happy with the quality. My wife did the staining and finish work. Great product and price.

Mine's a low budget model, made from a chrome baker's rack.
I found that standard sized window blinds are the exact width and when zip tied to the top rack in the rear extend down to the bottom shelf, creating not only a decorative backdrop, but slots to run the cables through.
I have a dark faux walnut woodgran look to mine.
Air circulation is at a premium.
  • My dream racks are the Critical Mass Systems QXK racks. They will be my next racks once I finish some other upgrades next year.
