Question

Not sure where to post this so I thought I'd start here. Comcast came by today unannounced and ran a new cable to my house. Of course they didn't bury it and ran it right through one of my landscape areas where it will be extremely difficult for me to bury due to all the large tree roots there. So now I've got this big orange cable in my landscaping and whole bunch of company showing up tonight.

I decided to slightly re-route the cable and went outside to start the project but the Comcast guy used a connector type I'm not familiar with (pic attached). Can someone tell me what type of connector this is and how to unplug it without damaging it. Looks like a pair of pliers and a counter-clockwise twist would do it but I'd like to be sure.

Or suggest another thread where this question would be more appropriate.

Thanks, Chriso8y117zdwhtj.jpg

Looks like PPC compression fittings..the knurled portion is the part that tightens it..hold the hex with a wrench while backing off...

Don't let them get away with being lazy.
  • Usually the cable company runs the cable, and a contractor comes along later and buries it.

One subcontractor runs a cable, and another one buries it. They'll get it right eventually...

Have y'all ever seen what a two man "cable company contractor" crew can do to an underground utility? They don't care or get there before the locate crew.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't they dig the trench first, then lay the cable, or do them simultaneously?

I know the sprinkler companies in my area have a machine the cuts the lawn, makes a furrow, lays the flexible pipe, then tamps the lawn back in place. I would think Comcast would have a similar type of machine.

When Time Warner did mine last year, it was a man with a shovel. He cut, lifted the sod and buried the cable just under it. It may be all of 1-1/2 deep.

Exactly what Comcast does here in Illinois. Nobody is going to dig a trench anymore, nor should you, it's not needed.

FWIW, and for better or worse, our cable is in a conduit with (adjacent to) our utilities. Of course, they ("xfinity", aka Comcast) had to run something like 400 feet from the pole to get it here, though some fairly rough terrain.

FWIW^2: Said condiut runs roughly across this photo from the middle left towards the trees on the right (which are along the road).

Ditch Witch? My sprinkler company uses it. Not sure if it can be used for cable.

Sprinklers are a different animal than cable. For normal residential stuff, not on 40 acres of land, they just flip it under the grass.

The reason why they don't want to use machines or go lower than under the grass line is the liability of breaking something else in the process. Gas lines can be very shallow especially the ones to any lights on your property that use gas. Telephone is another, and if it's fiber optic your in for a world of hurt to repair it. Sprinkler systems another.

Trust me, I know what this stuff costs to repair, it isn't worth the liability for a cable tv cable to go any deeper than below the grass. Russ knows too, I'm sure he's broken a thing or 2 in his day.....and I'm not talking chicks either. ;)

Our cable comes overhead to us from Comcast in most of the city. Mine on the other hand comes off the dish into the house all of about 40' max  never touches the ground

I managed to run my tiller though the phone line at our house in MA. I wasn't tilling very deep either.
  • Here in Ohio the cable company has small walk behind that tucks the cable just under the sod. It only leaves a small line in the grass that goes away in a week or two.
