Polk MagniFi Mini with SDA
Hey Polkies,
This is not why I asked the question about SDA, but I thought you might like to see a new implementation of it in a different type of product.
I know this type of product is not your typical cup of tea, but I thought it might be interesting to you for 2 reasons:
1) combining amplification, DSP, and angled geometry, we were able to get an effective 12 foot wide sound stage from a 13 inch wide speaker... imagine what we could do with that in other products...
2) while you guys are not the target audience for this, Thought you might know someone or have an application specific need in a bedroom where you might not have much space, the bedroom on the site is actually my guest room for example.
This is also our first product with Google Cast, so we are providing more ways for people to connect.

The forum members are more than just interested in two channel speakers. I have two of the last generation i-Sonics with a Squeezebox Touch connected to each via the auxiliary inputs. One for a bedroom and one for a home gym. The gym is used every day, the bedroom system is used every day, the home theater every few days, and the two channel system only every couple of weeks.
If the Magnifimini does streaming well and I bought one it would probably get the most use of any audio system at my house. Any thoughts on how this would be an improvement over the i-Sonic in terms of audio quality? -
@Emlyn , cool, thank you for describing your whole home set up. These kinds of ancillary applications, which sometimes become the primary applications like you stated, are exactly what we were thinking of when we designed this.
Compared to the iSonic, the sound is definitely different in that the iSonic is a little more omni directional while MagniFi Mini is more forward focused but with a large dimensional sound stage. The SDA does wonders as well. I think you will find it more dynamic as well based on the driver array and the wireless subwoofer. The sub cabinet is bit slimmer that our original MagniFi and SB1 subs as well so it can more easily tuck next to or behind a nightstand or other piece of furniture. -

I have one the higher end Polk sound bars, that incorporates SDA Tech in it. I bought it for my Sister to use in her bedroom with a 36" Flat-screen. Has a little wireless sub.
It actually sounds really good.Home Theater/2 Channel:

The soundstage on this thing is amazingly large. We had a demo set up at CEDIA on the same TV as the Signature Series. Of course we always demo'd the Mini first as not to spoil it with a full 5.1 tower demo, but the amount of people who got up off the couch to make sure that only the Mini was playing was pretty entertaining.

cool like the idea of a wireless sub, but have you tested it via the "Darla Scene" from Finding Nemo?

Glad you guys are digging it. The MagniFi Mini will be available in October, but you can get the full specs here: http://www.polkaudio.com/magni-fi-mini/d/1276C9217
They guy also has HDMI ARC so if you have a TV with HDMI ARC enabled and you hook it up via HDMI it will power up automatically with your TV and audio commands from your TV's remote will pass through with no programming.

^^^ I do not see a Polk coaster under the bottle on the right.
a-hum, attention to deal -
Seriously considering this for my living room. I have a 2 channel SDA 1C rig with a tubed pre-amp ( 8 tubes) and single ended class A amp (puts out tons of heat). When watching movies if we want big sound I need to power everything up.
I could run this out of the TV with no additional gear needed and use only for movies and TV, etc and not have to power up the big rig every time. Should give much better sound than the TV speakers.

As you should be. It's good sheet.
Let me know when you can get your hands on this and I will throw you a bone.

Long story short: Keep up the good work, Polk.
Get your foot in the door with an affordable product, a QUALITY product, and things will bloom from there.
The "2X as many drivers" flash animation, that shows an exploded view of the guts, is quite the nice touch. It answers the initial question of "What's this thing got that Brand X doesn't have ?". Grabs the attention, and then it's a simple hop, skip, and a jump to some specs and then, hopefully, a slightly longer trip to the checkout line.
... or the online store.
Establish a good base and build from there.

I bought a small (read : inexpensive) sound bar with wireless sub about a year ago because my new 48" LED in the den has speakers that sound like two tin cans tethered with string. Coulda shoulda waited I guess, this thing looks like a winner.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I have been looking for a good sounding soundbar for my Panasonic 55" plasma TV and this looks like a winner. How does this compare to higher end Polk soundbars? Am I correct that, if one wanted to use this for TV sound, one would just plug it into the TV via the hdmi port and be ready to go?
I think I may this may be exactly what I am looking for. I am new to home theater so any advice is greatly appreciated. I have a nice 2-channel system (Polk SDA 2BTL speakers, Parasound amp and pre amp and Rotel CD player) but am still learning about soundbars and home theater.
Thanks! -
That is a nice 2 channel set up! If you TV has HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) then yes, you can connect via HDMI. If not you can use the optical out from your TV. The MagniFi Mini comes with both connections and cables.
-
Thanks, D2Lo. I just checked my TV and it does indeed have HDMI ARC. I was not even aware of HDMI ARC before. It sound like this will work great. Thanks again.

@D2Lo How does the SDA work with all of the drivers being so close together? Is there a sweet spot directly in front of the MagniFi? How far back?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Amazon will often post new electronics products up for sale so people can put an order in to be first in line when the product is available for shipping. I think the official release date for the Mini isn't until October.
-
Yeah, I guess I didn't think about the fact they aren't released until sometime in October.
I can wait.
