why does Polk recommend Peerless copy for SL1000 now?

I just rec'd a reply to polk technical support recommending MidWest speakers' Peerless copy as a replacement for my SL1000's (SDA CRS 1984). I have seen Polk literature detailing the size differences and how to possibly get around them before...with the recomendation for a polk made replacement. Maybe this is a new policy bc of people having trouble mucking up their cabinets? Wanted to bring that to folks attn. anyway. Her concerns seemed to be only the fit/size and the impedence (8ohm). She didnt get into crossovers or electrical/freq' compatibility. MidWest is a silk dome too I guess.

My primary concern is tone. Good seal etc does come into play with that, but assuming I can mount them competently. F1, westmass, tnd etc. have made it clear the RDO-194 is the prefferred replacement to experienced listeners. Sorry to beat this to death, it suprised me to be directed elsewhere by Polk if their 194 is well loved as a replacement in the original CRS. Im gonna go with the 194's.

I would say that is because of size and being able to drop in. I've heard good things about them and they can't be worse that the SL1000 I would think. IIRC they do come in both 4ohm and 8ohm. The hole for both the SL1000 and Peerless is the same size and all screw holes line up that is not the same for the SL2000 holes are off a bit and cut out differently between the Peerless/SL1000

Thanks Pit. You guys have really answered all my questions 2-3 times over already. I was just suprised that she sent me to MidWest after I explained I was aware of size problems etc. She responded to my follow up with just what you said...explaining old screwholes should be caulked, route widened, etc..then I could call order 194 directly. Id cancel this thread but not sure how to :)

  • Most of the people you speak with at Polk CS weren't even born yet, when these vintage models were produced. The 84 CRSs have a contour network is series with the tweeter, and another one in the shunt. The correct tweeter is the SL1000, SL2000, or RDO-194-1, that's it. You cannot just throw any tweeter in.

RTA 12c still had sl1000's when the heck did the sl2000 come along? I thought all the C models had sl2000.

Thats what I was nagging around here waiting to hear thanks! This info also feeds my curiosity into XO upgrades/modifications more involved than merely replacing values.

I think the SL2000's came in at the end of 1984. Thats when it appears the CRS switched over from schematic and known serial numbers with 1000's anyway, October/November 1984.
