Any help with wood antique chair repair would be appreciated.

We bought this chair for $100 a few months ago. My wife really likes it a lot. I sat in it today and the bottom of the back and the arm all three broke off? Any ideas on how to fix it ? Thanks. Drwjpnflqb4a5.jpeg

From what I can see, the left rear post (as you sit) was broken off and poorly repaired, hence the root cause of your problem today.

Edit: looks like the right side had some work as well.

The best advice I can give is take it to a professional and be prepared to pay a lot for a proper repair.

I assure you that a proper repair will exceed the purchase price by a large amount.

She really ,really likes the chair. I was thinking I could saw off the stubs and find some big wood dowels. And drill holes in each side and wood glue both ends. Thanks for both your suggestions. Peace. D

I've done repairs like that. Takes a lot of patience, and perfect alignment to drill out the spindles. A qualified restorer would probable have a specialty wood lathe designed for that purpose. Similar to how a gun barrel is bored and rifled.

The good news is it looks like the breaks are in inconspicuous places, the view of which is obscured by the architecture of the chair from most positions. This may make an amateur repair more tolerable from a "beauty" standpoint. The problem is it looks like there is significant weight/pressure on the broken areas, hence less stable repairs are likely to re-break easily.
