FS: Cary SLP-05 Tube Preamp in Silver

Selling my beloved Cary SLP-05.

I have had this in my system about a year. I am the second owner.

This is a great sounding preamp and has given me zero trouble. Soundstage is wide, dynamics are fantastic. This thing is velvety smooth.

It is in near perfect condition. Only blemish I can find is on the top of the power supply unit. It has a couple of minor scratches in the black finish. I have included a picture but it is really difficult to see. I will be happy to send additional pictures if needed. After placing unit in my system I never noticed the scratches until I removed it again this morning. And if placing the preamp on top of the power supply, as seen in the pictures, they cannot be seen.

If a tube preamp is on your want list this one should be considered.

Set (6) of Raytheon tubes. I only have 6. They are pictured in the preamp pictures below. 6 tubes run the line-stage and 2 run the headphone amp. I always left the EH tubes in the headphone amp as I rarely used the headphone section.

I wanted to point out in the picture above that my shadow is also in the picture. So the scratches are at the top, right at the edge before the faceplate and not down the middle. That is my arm holding the camera and light.

Since purchasing this unit I have been very happy with everything I have paired it with. At time of purchase I was running the Rogue M-180's. That was a great combo at lower volumes. As I increased output the pairing was not able to control the lower/bass as I wanted. This appears to be more related to the M-180's than the SLP-05. Once I brought the McIntosh MC-601's into the picture the system was well under control. This was all done running a pair of Legacy Focus SE's.

I did have a quick run with the SLP-05 paired with the M-180's and also paired with a Parasound A21. This is when I still had my Polk SDA SRS's. Since I had all this equipment I wanted to see how this setup would sound. With the SLP-05, Polks and M-180's I never heard the Polks sound better. Bass was well rounded, mids were liquid smooth and the top was the best I had heard the Polks in the 20 years my dad and I had them. When I took the M-180's out and placed the A21 into the mix bass control was very good but the mids and highs were not as smooth as with the M-180's.

With everything considered this is a GREAT preamp. The best I have owned. I hope that I do not regret selling it. But I want to try something new. Its the life of a audiophile....

I certainly understand that, that's how I ended up with more stuff than I need...I don't want to let a piece go and then realize I made a mistake. Don't want to have sellers remorse.

Im trying out a McIntosh C50 right now. I was not sure how I would like it but it pairs with the MC601's and all of Dougs cables well.
