Is it just me or did someone replace the foam surrounds with actual foam? Maybe Mr Hardy can chime in and tell us that this was the norm back in the day? Peace. D

That looks like pieces of weather stripping.

WOW, thanks for the chuckle this morning..

Oh man the buyer paid too much.
-
What a disaster. If there is any upside it looks like the job was done so badly it should be possible to remove the foam and do the job correctly.
If the eq were included I could see a 901 lover feeling alright buying these at the price. -
Heck of a re-foam job LOL. Unfortunately, there's enough extra glue dripping down the cones, that they may not be salvageable.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Some people need to have their fingers broken with their own tools. In this case, I propose that Society find the perpetrator and stuff his nose and sinuses full of foam and glue.

"Sound good", with a modern stereo. I guess they would sound bad with vintage stereo.....LOL. Got to love the surround job.The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
It is imperative that we recognize that an opinion is not a fact. -
With no stands or eq someone had to want these bad. Shopping around one can buy a nice set of Monitor 7's for less than those dogs went for. I paid less for my SDA 2a's.
The BOSE fans are a dedicated lot. They say the same thing about us Polk fanatics so I guess that one goes both ways. -

You are correct Dave, there are never any absolutes. I had a pair of 601's way back when that I thought were nice. My one trip to 901 land left me wanting though the set up at the time would have never allowed them to be at their best. -
Pffffft! Foam isn't the correct way to repair.....only the best bathroom caulk will work!

The original 1978 601s were quite good, and even better with Sonicaps and Mills resistors. 901s are very polarizing, some love them, some hate them. Same goes for all SDAs, I've heard them referred to as gimmicky, and an abomination.
901s require a lot of room, a very solid reflective surface, and plenty of clean power.

Did you use cloth or foam surrounds? Thanks. I only use treated cloth. I don't even offer foam to my customers. Waste of money.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Exactly. I was quite fond of my 901 VI's, even in hindsight; but they were powered with 600watts/rms of Soundcraftsmen goodness (2 PM840's bridged), and the EQ run line-level (not wired between pre and amp).

The best place to insert the EQ in the chain, is via the Tape Monitor or Processor Loop. The pre-out/main-in method is the fallback, but has a higher noise level.Home Theater/2 Channel:
