Just picked this player up. I own a few PS3's . And am wondering how this eight year old player matches up and what it does good and does not do good. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Dg74vjklsbjo0.jpeg

Pioneer are known for their great PQ, will decode or passthrough newer codecs, but load times are slow compared to other brands

I'll agree with that assessment, having the Pioneer 320 myself. Pic and sound is great, load times a tad slower than the competition.

The 05 is a nice player, I wouldn't kick it out of the rack for being a senior citizen.

I run the BD51fd Pioneer in my basement system (pretty much the same player as the Elite with one or two less features, but same weight, same DACs, same Video processing, etc.) n fact, a number of us got this player when BB put it on closeout years ago.

It's SLOOOOWWWW! as K72 points out above, slow to load. But, and I also have a PS3 upstairs for TV/gaming etc. The Pioneer is the superior player. Has a better picture and leaves the PS3 in the dust when it comes to audio. Some of us, including Dskip, have used this as a main CDP for a while. It has very good CD sound for a BDP player. Will it compete with a top end Marantz or a tube player, maybe not. But for "double" duty in an AV system it'll do.

WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING, lol

I have two, one being a backup. The load time doesn't bother me a bit, but then again I'm not one of the many out there today with zero patience.

As Skip suggests, a bit of Dynamat always helps. Since mine is for video I use an MIT HDMI cable and a PS Audio Statement power cord.

I went through about a dozen budget dacs trying to best my dynamatted 51 and they all failed. The first one to top it was the essence HDACC. The pios are slow but worth the wait for picture and sound quality. If you want to up your game, dynamat it, get doug's interconnects, and throw an upgraded power cord on it. Those three things really elevated the performance in both realms.

I got one and threw the dynamatt in. Sounds great and the picture just pops...when it plays. Has trouble getting through a bluray.

    Any suggestions??

I probably should verify if it has the latest firmware...

If it starts to play the Blu-ray, but has issues as it plays it's not a firmware problem.

Watched Mad Max last night. Do not see any improvements over PS3 in PQ. But sound quality is better. Played the Blu-Ray disc perfect. Thanks again. D

Here is the only thread I could find quick with pictures. I "think" @DSkip also has a thread with pictures of his, but I couldn't find it quick. These are for a different model (BDP-51FD), but the same stuff should apply to this player too..

I'm actually surprised as I did a huge shootout with the PS3 and the BDP-05 and the BDP-05 was a much better sounding a video player. The PS3 looked a bit grainy compared to the 05 which had a more film like presentation. Colors seemed more stable and more accurate.
I did this on a 106 Screen with a Pioneer Elite Projector about 7 or 8 years ago. I still remember sitting there in that theater just loving every minute of it.
If you do a search in here, I think I posted pictures of that theater.
